Beauty In The Garb Of Ugliness

By Super Admin

Beauty and Ugliness
Ugliness generally masquerades in the cloak of beauty. A discerning eye can comprehend the beauty beneath ugliness, while those who are contented to live the superficial way are carried away by its deception.

Osho narrates a short story of Kahlil Gibran portraying the idea of beauty concealed in ugliness.

The story goes that God created the goddess of beauty and the goddess of ugliness during the time of creation of the world and sent them to the earth together. Since they had to cover a great distance, they both grew tired mid way. Since the journey was dreary and dusty, it appeared as if they were cloaked in dust. Their clothes were dirty and on finding a pool, both decided to take a dip and refresh themselves before pursuing their journey.

The goddess of beauty enjoyed the refreshing, cool waters and was cleansing herself thoroughly while the Goddess of ugliness took a hurried dip and swam ashore. She grabbed the opportunity to adorn the clothes of beauty and made a quick and cunning escape. The Goddess of beauty did not but have to wear the dirty clothes of her ugly companion and proceed with her journey. Ever since it has been the reign of ugliness in the world under the garb of beauty.

Osho says that suffering walks in the cloak of happiness, untruth parades in the mantle of truth and so on, as frail human tendencies with a blind eye go for the superficial beauty of ugliness actually burried underneath. A little self restraint will guard one in falling into the trap of ugliness clad in beauty.

Self restraint unveil the everlasting beauty beneath things.
