Pure Expression

A blind man who lived near the temple where Bankei stayed, told his friend of him,sharply sensing the temperament of people through the tone of their voice at different circumstances. The conversation happened after Bankei's death.

He said "When I heard some one congratulate the other for their happiness or success, there was always a note of envy. When condoling someone for their misfortune, a trace of pleasure was found in the note as if the one condoling had some gain out of it"

However in the case of Bankei, whenever his voice expressed happiness , it was pure and untainted and whenever he expressed sorrow, it was a pure expression of sorrow!
