Friendship after Love
"Love is rarer than genius itself. And friendship is rarer than love." -- Charles Peguy
You make the best of friends during college days. Two people become best friends and hang out together most of the time. A guy and a girl become best pals. One fine day 's arrow strikes and unknowingly both of them fall in love. The lovey-dovey feeling lasts long enough for them to become serious in a relationship and dream sweet-honeyed dreams. Time goes by and the relationship starts to weaken. The unseen thread that held both the friends together in a heart of love fizzles out and breaks. And suddenly they realize that he/she is your best friend and you may loose that with the breakup. So to keep him/her your best friend, the break up should be subtle yet final.
A break up is always tough. Should you or should you not talk to him about your real feelings? Should you tell him/her that you no longer think that the relationship would work? The decision is to be made immediately and you make it. Now comes the hardest part... Do you still remain friends? Can you still talk to each other as before? Can you be casual and yet maintain the real friendship that existed before you turned s disciples?
Can the breakup be easy and yet maintain friendship?
The simple answer is YES. Understanding, patience and space is required for the two to come to terms with the decision. Space does not mean not talking to the other person for long. It simply means, try giving a little time to the person for himself. Earlier where you used to stay together the whole day, now stay out with the person only for some time. Do things that friends do. Try not to go out alone; do group activities, like movie with a bunch of buddies, lunch or picnic. Make that other person feel that even though you have broken off, you still want to be friends and value his/her friendship. Go out together in a group.
Things not to do are:
The first and the most important thing is not to talk about your breakup to other people before you tell the person. Gossipmongers would stir up the cocktail and brew out a merrier drink and ruin your relationship even before you have had a decent chance to break up. Don't try and push the other person towards someone else. That hurts the sentiments and shows you in poor light. Try not to be artificial. Show your real feelings and rest assured that the other person will realize and respect you as a friend.
"Give her two red roses, each with a note. The first note says 'For the woman I love' and the second, 'For my best friend." - Unknown
