Karnataka Govt Releases Circular On School Bag Weight: Effects Of Heavy Bags On Children
A circular has been issued by the Karnataka government on the weight of school bags and following the guidelines of the School Bag Policy 2020 [1]. Officials at the block level have been ordered to ensure strict compliance with the directive.

In accordance with the circular, the school bag should not weigh more than 15% of the student's body weight. A 'no bag day' should also be celebrated by schools once a week, ideally on a Saturday.
This initiative by the Karnataka government should be appreciated, considering the impact heavy bags can have on not just the back/spine of school-going children, but on their overall health.
In this article, we will look into the effect heavy bags can have on school-going children. Take a look.
How Does Heavy Bags Affect School-going Children?
While it may seem like a minute issue, heavy bags can actually pose a serious threat to the health and well-being of school-going children.

1. Back pain: Carrying heavy bags can lead to back pain, which is one of the most common problems faced by school-going children. The weight of the bag can cause strain on the muscles and ligaments of the back, leading to pain and discomfort [2]. Elizabeth, a Bangalore resident says, "I had constant back pain from carrying all the books, sometimes my parents would separate it into two different bags, so little me could balance the weight."
2. Poor posture: Heavy bags can also cause poor posture, which can lead to long-term health problems. Carrying a heavy bag on one shoulder can cause the spine to bend, leading to a hunched posture. "During my school days, which is like years and years ago, my bag was so heavy that I remember after a point of time, my mother would carry it till class for me," says Amrita.
3. Fatigue: Carrying a heavy bag all day can cause fatigue and exhaustion among school-going children. This can affect their concentration and ability to learn, making it difficult for them to perform well in school [3].
4. Risk of injury: Carrying a heavy bag can increase the risk of injury, especially if the bag is not properly packed or if the child is not carrying it correctly [4]. Injuries can range from minor strains to more serious injuries like sprains and fractures. "My brother once fell face-first as he had lost his balance while walking up the stairs with a school bag that was too heavy," says Sangeetha.

Tips And Recommendations...
It is important for schools and parents to take steps to reduce the burden of heavy bags on school-going children. Some expert recommendations include using backpacks with padded straps and back support, encouraging children to use lockers or storage areas at school, and limiting the weight of bags to no more than 10% of the child's body weight.
On A Final Note...
Heavy bags can have a significant impact on the health and well-being of school-going children. It is important for schools and parents to take steps to reduce the burden and ensure that children can learn and grow without unnecessary physical strain.
By following some simple recommendations, we can help to ensure that our children remain healthy and happy throughout their school years.
