Can diabetes cause infertility? There could be so many reasons behind infertility, and diabetes could also be one.
There could be so many reasons behind infertility, and diabetes could also be one. A blood test can determine whether your glucose levels are the reason behind the issue.
Types 2 diabetes is one condition that can hurt your chances of getting pregnant. And yes, it can also affect men's fertility.
Type 1 diabetes can cause several issues to both the mother as well as the foetus. In case of type 2 diabetes, certain precautions can be taken to make the pregnancy safe. Here are some more facts you need to know.

Risk Of Miscarriage
Women with very high glucose levels may not be able to get pregnant easily. Diabetes could stop the embryo from getting implanted inside the uterus. Also, the risk of miscarriage could increase.

Percentage Of Risk
Even after a woman conceives, diabetes could affect an ongoing pregnancy. The risk of miscarriage could be around 30 to 60% more in women suffering from diabetes.

Birth Defects
In some cases, diabetes could raise the risk of birth defects in the baby. High blood sugar could cause damage to the embryonic cells.

Hormonal Issues
Pregnancy involves the action of certain hormones like progesterone, testosterone and estrogen. High glucose levels may also affect the hormones and cause fertility issues. In such cases, blood sugar levels need to be controlled.

Male Fertility
Diabetes could hit male fertility too. It could cause retrograde ejaculation. Retrograde means going back. The semen which has to come out at the time of ejaculation, may get back to the bladder and this could hurt the chances of pregnancy.

Erectile Issues
Some men experience erectile issues due to diabetes. Diabetes could also damage DNA in the sperm. This could cause several foetal issues.

Volume Of Semen
Men suffering from diabetes may produce less volume of semen. Also, the sperm cell of a diabetic differs a lot from a normal healthy man.

Diabetic Men
Impregnation could be tough for a diabetic man. Even if pregnancy occurs, the risk of other problems like miscarriage and birth defects may also be high if the blood glucose levels aren't controlled.

Can Diabetics Have Children?
Though the risk factors are high, controlling glucose levels could reduce the risks. Consult your doctor if you or your partner is diabetic. Diet, exercise and controlled glucose levels may help.
