Antibiotics During Pregnancy: Doctor Answers Frequently Asked Questions
Pregnancy is a time of many changes in a woman's body. Some of these changes can make her more susceptible to infections. Whether it is a urinary tract infection, respiratory infection, or skin infection, sometimes pregnant women need antibiotics to stay safe and healthy and ensure that their babies are also safe.
However, the use of antibiotics during pregnancy is often accompanied by questions. Pregnant women are often concerned about whether it is safe to take antibiotics and how these drugs might affect their babies. We asked Dr Anuja Thomas, Consultant - Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar, Mumbai, to answer some common questions about antibiotics in pregnancy.
FAQs About Antibiotics in Pregnancy
Here are some common questions and answers that can help clear doubts.
1. Will antibiotics harm my baby?
Women shouldn't panic, and not all antibiotics are harmful. Doctors prescribe only those that are known to be safe in pregnancy. Hence, it is important to take medication that is only prescribed by your doctor. "This is because the doctor carefully chooses the right type and dose so that it treats the infection without affecting the baby's growth. The stage of pregnancy also matters. Some antibiotics may be safe in the later months of pregnancy, but should be avoided in the first trimester when the baby's organs are developing," said Dr Thomas.
2. Can I take antibiotics on my own during pregnancy?
"No, you should never self-medicate during pregnancy. Taking the wrong antibiotic, wrong dose, or unnecessary medicines can cause side effects, resistance, or even harm the baby and your health," warned Dr Thomas. For this reason, always consult your doctor before taking any antibiotics, and avoid using over-the-counter medications without medical advice. Furthermore, incomplete courses of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance, making future infections more difficult to treat.
3. Why are antibiotics needed in pregnancy?
Infection can sometimes spread rapidly during pregnancy which can lead to complications, including kidney infection, premature labour and low birth weight in baby. Antibiotics help control infection and prevent complications. Treating the infection is often safer than leaving it untreated and suffering in silence.
4. What precautions should I follow if prescribed antibiotics?
Take the medicine exactly as advised by the doctor. Do not stop midway, even if symptoms improve; it is imperative to complete the antibiotic course.
"Make sure to avoid alcohol or other medicines unless cleared by your doctor, and see to it that you inform the doctor about any allergies or past reactions to antibiotics. Some antibiotics may disturb the gut bacteria and cause digestive issues or yeast infections. One must seek urgent medical attention if you notice rashes, breathing difficulty , swelling, or if fever/infection symptoms worsen despite antibiotics," advised Dr Thomas.
Bottomline
Dr Thomas concluded, "Antibiotics are safe during pregnancy when used under expert guidance. Pregnant women should never self-medicate and rely on their doctor's advice. So, what are you waiting for? Take charge of your health right away and stay healthy!"
