World Tourism Day 2026: Significance, Theme And How India Is Redesigning Tourism With Artificial Intelligence
World Tourism Day 2026 comes at a time when technology is changing how people discover destinations, plan holidays and experience new places. Observed every year on September 27, the day highlights tourism's contribution to economies, employment, communities and cultural exchange. This year, the focus moves towards the growing role of digital technology and artificial intelligence in shaping the sector.
World Tourism Day 2026 Theme
The theme for World Tourism Day 2026 is "Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism." The global observance will be held on September 27 in El Salvador.
The theme reflects the increasing use of AI and digital tools across tourism. From personalised travel recommendations and destination discovery to digital bookings and visitor services, technology is becoming part of several stages of the travel experience.
Why AI Matters For Tourism
Artificial intelligence can help tourism become more personalised and accessible. Travellers can use AI-powered tools to explore destinations, receive recommendations and organise aspects of their journeys. Tourism businesses can also use data and digital technology to understand visitor behaviour and improve services.
However, the digital shift is not only about convenience. The 2026 focus also brings attention to making tourism more inclusive, sustainable and beneficial to local communities and businesses.
India's Tourism Sector In 2026
India is also highlighting its digital tourism transformation this World Tourism Day. According to the Ministry of Tourism, tourism contributed 5.22% to India's GDP in 2023-24 and supported 8.46 crore jobs. In 2025, India recorded 428.55 crore domestic tourist visits and 2.53 crore foreign tourist visits, while tourism-related foreign exchange earnings reached ₹2,76,831 crore.
The government is also introducing the National Digital Tourism Stack, an open digital public infrastructure initiative intended to make tourism offerings more discoverable, accessible and trustworthy. Dekho Apna Desh 2.0 is being highlighted alongside it to promote lesser-known, tourism-ready destinations and encourage a wider distribution of tourist footfall.
How India Is Using Digital Tourism
The revamped Incredible India Digital Platform includes virtual experiences covering heritage, culture, adventure, gastronomy, wellness, crafts and rural tourism. Its AI-powered features can provide personalised experiences, including real-time weather information and city exploration, while the platform also connects travellers with booking services.
India has also expanded digital partnerships. In June 2026, the Ministry of Tourism signed an MoU with Google India covering digital promotion, artificial intelligence, data-driven insights and capacity building.
World Tourism Day 2026: A More Connected Future For Travel
World Tourism Day 2026 places technology at the centre of tourism's next phase, but the larger objective extends beyond digital convenience. The challenge is to use AI and data in ways that improve travel while supporting local communities, businesses, employment and sustainable destinations.
As tourism becomes increasingly digital, the future of travel may depend not simply on how much technology is available, but on how effectively it connects people with places, cultures and experiences.
