Who Is V.D. Satheesan? The Opposition Firebrand Replacing Pinarayi Vijayan As Kerala Chief Minister
After days of political suspense, Kerala finally has its next Chief Minister. Senior Congress leader V.D. Satheesan has officially been chosen to lead the state after the Congress-led UDF returned to power in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections.
The decision came nearly 10 days after the results were declared, with intense discussions inside the Congress over who would take the top post. Satheesan's name was eventually cleared after consultations involving Rahul Gandhi, K.C. Venugopal, Deepa Dasmunshi, and other senior leaders.
Deepa Dasmunshi later confirmed that Satheesan had been selected as the Congress Legislature Party leader, formally paving the way for him to become Kerala's new CM.
For many in Kerala politics, the announcement did not come as a surprise. Over the last five years, Satheesan had steadily become one of the most visible and vocal faces of the opposition against the Pinarayi Vijayan government.
Why V.D. Satheesan's Appointment Is Significant
The 2026 election marked a major comeback for the United Democratic Front (UDF), which returned to power after spending a decade in opposition. Reports say the alliance secured 102 seats in the 140-member Assembly, giving Congress a strong mandate.
Satheesan's rise is closely tied to that comeback story. Since becoming Leader of Opposition in 2021, he played a central role in rebuilding the Congress organisation in Kerala at a time when the party was struggling internally and electorally.
Inside the Assembly, he became known for sharp speeches, aggressive attacks on the ruling government, and consistent campaigns on corruption and governance issues. Outside it, he built an image of a leader who stayed closely connected with workers and local politics rather than relying only on high-command visibility.
Who Is V.D. Satheesan?
V.D. Satheesan's full name is Vadassery Damodaran Satheesan. Born on May 31, 1964, in Nettoor near Kochi, he comes from a legal and academic background before entering full-time politics.
He studied at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, completed his MSW from Rajagiri College, earned an LLB from Kerala Law Academy, and later completed his LLM from Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram.
Before politics took over completely, Satheesan reportedly practised law at the Kerala High Court for several years.
His electoral journey began with a defeat in the 1996 Assembly elections. But in 2001, he won from Paravur constituency and has held the seat ever since. With the 2026 victory, he became a six-time MLA.
The Long Road To The Top Post
The Chief Minister race inside Congress was not straightforward. Several reports described it as one of the party's most closely watched leadership battles in recent Kerala politics.
Apart from Satheesan, names like K.C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala were also part of the discussions. The delay in announcing the CM reflected the balancing act Congress had to manage between factions and alliance expectations.
Still, Satheesan reportedly had strong backing from sections of Congress workers, younger party supporters, and even leaders within the IUML, an important UDF ally.
Interestingly, despite spending decades in politics, Satheesan had never served as a minister before being chosen Chief Minister.
V.D. Satheesan Personal Life
He is married to R. Lakshmipriya, and the couple has a daughter, Unnimaya. Despite his growing national visibility, Satheesan has largely kept his family life away from political spotlight, with most of his public image centred around Assembly debates, constituency work, and organisational politics within Congress.
What Happens Next?
Attention now shifts to the swearing-in ceremony, cabinet formation, and portfolio distribution. Congress will also need to carefully balance internal factions and alliance partners while shaping the new government.
In his first remarks after being selected, Satheesan thanked Congress workers and UDF leaders, saying the responsibility had been entrusted to him by both the party and the people of Kerala.
For Kerala, this transition marks the beginning of a new political chapter. And for V.D. Satheesan, it is the biggest test of a political career built largely from the opposition benches.
