Who Is Curry Barker? The Gen-Z Director Behind Obsession's Box Office Shock
He was a self-described "straight-C and -D student" from Mobile, Alabama, who ran a YouTube channel with his friends and played in a marching band. Curry Barker, born 22 September 1999, spent his school years juggling a rock band, a YouTube channel, and a deep, consuming love for horror films. Nobody would have called it a career plan. And yet, in May 2026, Barker's name is on every major studio's lips.
His film Obsession was shot in 20 days on a budget of just US$750,000, with a relatively unknown cast. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025 and sold to Focus Features for US$15 million, breaking the record for the highest acquisition price in TIFF's history. By the time it hit US theatres on 15 May, it had already grossed over US$95 million worldwide.
This is not a slow-burn career arc. This is a detonation.
The YouTube Years: Sketches, Pranks, and Learning to Hook a Crowd
Before any of the Hollywood deals, Barker was honing his sensibility through social media sketch comedy, alongside co-star and creative partner Cooper Tomlinson, as the duo "That's a Bad Idea." The sketches were made for the algorithm; fast, punchy, designed to grab attention in the first two seconds or lose the viewer entirely.
It is a school that has quietly produced some of the sharpest storytellers of the current generation. Barker himself acknowledges the paradox: he has the patience to sit with scenes and maximise their discomfort, an uncommon quality for a filmmaker who emerged from a world of algorithmically optimised content.
The YouTube background was not just background noise. It was training.
A Horror Obsession That Started at Age 11
In a 2026 interview, Barker stated that his interest in horror began when he watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake at the age of 11. That experience made him want to chase the feeling of being genuinely shocked.
Before Obsession, Barker tested his horror instincts with Milk & Serial, a no-budget YouTube film that ended up on Variety's list of the best horror films of 2024, alongside titles like The Substance and Nosferatu. For most filmmakers, that would be an extraordinary achievement. For Barker, it was a rehearsal.
Barker has spoken about why comedians make such compelling horror directors: "I feel like there's a darkness in comedy. As a comedian, you're constantly studying the human condition, constantly studying how to make fun of humans. When you're always studying the psychology of why people do things, those skills lend themselves really well to horror."
What Obsession Is Actually About
Obsession follows Bear, played by Michael Johnston, who uses a mysterious novelty item called a "One Wish Willow" to wish that his longtime crush, Nikki, would love him more than anyone in the world, with disastrous consequences. It is, at its core, a film about the darkness inside longing. About wanting someone so badly that you stop seeing them clearly.
The increasingly bloody and brutal course of Bear and Nikki's relationship reveals unsettling truths about modern relationships, and it is these revelations that linger far beyond the jump scares.
What Comes Next: A24, Blumhouse, and Hollywood on Speed Dial
Focus Features acquired Barker's follow-up feature, Anything But Ghosts, even before Obsession opened theatrically. The film, which Barker co-wrote and co-stars in alongside Cooper Tomlinson and Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard, follows ghost-hunter con artists who encounter a genuinely dangerous spirit.
Barker has also signed a deal with A24 to direct a Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot, the same franchise that first terrified him at age 11. The full circle is almost too neat to be true.
Producer Roy Lee compared Barker to filmmaker Zach Cregger, the mind behind Barbarian. "Some people just have that ability: what they create is cinematic," Lee said. "He's going to be following in the footsteps of Zach, just a few years behind."
