Severe Cold Wave Continues in Delhi-NCR as Dense Fog Reduces Visibility
Delhi and its adjoining National Capital Region remained under the grip of severe winter conditions for yet another day on Thursday as bitter cold and thick fog once again rolled over the region. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for the cold wave conditions across Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram, asking for precautionary measures against the cold that continues to bite.
Temperature Snapshot
- Delhi's minimum temperature hovered at 3.8 °C, thus making it a very chilly morning across the capital.
- The readings also dropped dangerously low in Gurugram when the temperature touched almost 0.8 °C early Thursday morning in some areas.
- Such low figures are well below the normal for this time of year and a reflection of the persistent cold wave conditions that have kept the region in a deep freeze for several days.
Dense Fog Affects Visibility
The early morning hours of Thursday were marked by dense fog that stretched over a vast area of the capital region. The visibility in several areas of Delhi NCR was zero in some spots, affecting road and air traffic.
The meteorological department has pointed out that the fog may thicken after sunrise, with visibility going below 50 meters in some places, which can prove dangerous for drivers.
Impact on Daily Life
The combination of sub-normal temperatures and heavy fog has made daily life difficult for residents. Commutes on major roads and expressways have slowed down due to low visibility, and the cold has also raised concerns for vulnerable groups like the elderly and school-going children.
Air travel operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport have been affected in spots, with flights facing delays because of limited visibility early in the morning.
What's Ahead?
Although Thursday is set to be very cold, there are indications that a western disturbance may bring some relief later in the week, with a slight increase in night temperatures expected on Friday.
Currently, the cold wave and fog are the major weather concerns in the region, and people are advised to stay warm and exercise caution while driving due to low visibility.
Tips To Take Care Of Yourself In The Cold
As the cold wave continues, it's important to take a few simple precautions.
- Dress in layers to trap body heat and avoid long exposure to early-morning cold and fog.
- Keep yourself well hydrated, as winter air can be dehydrating, and include warm fluids like soups or herbal teas in your routine.
- Apply moisturisers to your skin and lips to keep them from becoming too dry, and wear gloves, caps, or warm socks to protect your hands, ears, and feet.
- People suffering from respiratory ailments must avoid going outdoors during peak fog hours, whereas drivers must exercise caution and use fog lights to ensure safety.
