WAYS TO BECOME A CEO BEFORE 40

Before you resign yourself to a big fat “no”, try the following. They are not magic mantras on how to get a promotion, but some tried and tested strategies to deal with the annoying person at work.

Lay the groundwork: Our first tip on how to get a promotion is to ensure that you deserve one. Don’t be discouraged because your boss is a bad egg. Behave professionally and don’t whine about any annoying person at work, boss included. Be punctual, be proactive. He won’t thank you for it, but he will find it very hard to fault you.

Ask for your boss’ time: If appraisals are coming up, your boss possibly has the mandate for promotions. Ask nicely, in an email, for a pre-appraisal meeting. If he doesn’t respond, ask him directly, politely. Pin him down to a time, explaining you just need a few minutes. Try saying “I require your guidance” “You’re the best person to speak to about this”.

Open your case: Talk about how your achievements have contributed to the team and the company, supported by facts.Don’t compare yourself with your peers, but state how you could do well in a new role. Defend yourself calmly against any accusations. Don’t get emotional or personal, even if he does. That is not how to get a promotion.

If he says no, ask why: Even good bosses may have bad reasons for denying you. Check if his reasons are genuine. If he’s a truly bad boss he may hem and haw to make excuses. If you put him on the spot, he will have to admit that there is very little reason to hold you back.

Ask what you can do: How to get a promotion if it looks like he is not going to change his mind? Ask him how you can be eligible for promotion in the next cycle. Write it down in his presence, so that he is committed and cannot go back on his words. Ask him for a realistic timeline. If you’re are already fulfilling many conditions on his list, say so.
