The government of India, in 1984, declared to observe this day as the "National Youth Day" in a move to encourage youths to follow the ideals and principles of the great scholar.
;On national youth day, various mutts and missions around the nation celebrate swami Vivekananda's birthday by reciting devotional songs, bhajans, yogasanas, seminars conventions, competitions and many more activities to encourage the budding talents. Swami Vivekananda's writings and lectures were based on the Indian spiritual tradition and his master Sri Ramakrishna's preachings. The teachings have been a great source of inspiration and motivation to numerous youth organisations. His complete works have been published by Advaitha Ashrama in Kolkata.
