Macquarie Dictionary Selects “The Word of 2009”

The words which we use for casual talk have been put up by to compete for the title of 'The Word of 2009'. This includes the words like media punking, noob, blag, staycation and tweet.
The panel of judgement include Dr Michael spence, Vice chancellor of the University of Sydney , Poet Les Murray and Susan Butler, editors of Macquaire Dictionary. They will decide whether tweet, the act of posting the message on twitter, can be the most popular term which defined the yesteryear or not.
Noob- the new person online or in a chat room; Staycation - stay-at-home holiday where someone pretends to be a tourist in the hometown etc are the other terms among the most popular.
The other words coined by casual talks include media punking, the trick of the media into believing the false story; blagging, talking in a way to get something for free; slacktivists, those who sign online petitions or displays badges for a cause but do little else. The selection will be done on February 3.
