Girlie talk-what's there in that giggle? How does one identify a group of guys together from a distance? There are clouds of smoke emerging from shared cigarettes; there are squeals, whistles, claps and hi-five's in the air. What about getting to know the existence of a girl troupe around?

Simple! You hear giggles, peals of laughter and hush-hush whispers. Ever noticed that each time you have seen two girls or more together you hear a wave of giggles. What is it about the girls association with giggles?

Giggles are the suppressed form of laughter and is a universal trait seen in girls. Usually, giggles are a girl's responses to a situation, event or a person, considered funny to her. Girls giggle, be it the uneducated group near a water tank in a village or the master degree students waiting outside the classroom for the lecturer to arrive. It is inbuilt, shall we say? Giggles are a unique signal of communication and conformity to girls in groups. It also is a means of drawing attention many a time.

A giggle attracts greater curiosity and attention than laughter does. A quiet giggle in the classroom right under the teacher's nose gives more pleasure than a hearty laugh out in the public. Ask any teenager and she shall vouch for this.

Whispers and giggles have always been associated with girls, be it the naughty ones, the mischievous ones and also the reserved or quiet ones. The girls usually express their funny feelings through giggles because they prefer it quieter than laughter and it also because it is their own little secret, which should not be heard aloud. What the middle-aged women are accused of busy gossiping in groups, the teenaged girls get away with all the attention for giggling together. And we always complained of only gender bias!
