Nelson Mandela was a South African revolutionary, political leader and philanthropist. He was born in 1918 in the village of Mvezo in South Africa's Eastern Cape province. He is often referred to as the 'Gandhi of South Africa' for his lifelong struggle against racial oppression and for his commitment to non-violent resistance.

Education and Early Career

Mandela attended Fort Hare University, where he studied law. After graduating, he moved to Johannesburg and became involved in the anti-apartheid movement. He became a leader within the African National Congress (ANC), a political organization dedicated to ending racial segregation.

Leadership in the ANC

In 1961, Mandela was appointed commander-in-chief of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), an armed wing of the ANC that conducted sabotage operations against government targets. In 1964, he was arrested and charged with treason. He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Release from Prison and Presidency

In 1990, after 27 years behind bars, Mandela was released from prison due to international pressure on the South African government. In 1994, he became South Africa's first democratically elected president. During his presidency, he worked tirelessly towards reconciliation between whites and blacks.
