His final book, the historical novel Adam & Eve, was due out on Tuesday, 6 October. Archer had signed copies of it with broadcaster Gyles Brandreth at London's Leicester Square Theatre the day before he died.

Jeffrey Archer Dies Between Writing Sessions

HarperCollins said he died "suddenly and peacefully" at home. Another report said it happened between writing sessions.

Brandreth said he could not believe the news, recalling the warm reception Archer received on stage and the energy he brought to their conversation. Archer had been due to discuss the book at the Cheltenham Festival on Saturday, 10 October.

Only days earlier, he had said in an interview that although he was retiring from novels, he had no plans to stop work altogether.

Adam & Eve: The Last Of 31 Novels

In January, Archer announced that Adam & Eve would be his 31st and final novel, saying the scale of the book had convinced him he could not surpass it. In July, he posted that it would close five decades of storytelling, with a final Collector's Edition created to mark the occasion.

The book follows the intertwined destinies of the highborn and the humble.

A Career Of More Than 300 Million Books

Archer's novels sold more than 300 million copies worldwide and appeared in 119 countries. They spent five and a half years on The New York Times bestseller lists. He was best known for his 1976 debut, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, and for Kane and Abel, published in 1979. Kane & Abel alone has sold more than 50 million copies.

His public life included a political career that ended in disgrace. In 2001, he served two years of a four-year sentence after being convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice.

Survived By His Wife And Two Sons

Born on 15 April 1940, Archer was Baron Archer of Weston-super-Mare. He is survived by his wife, the scientist and academic Dame Mary Archer, their sons William and James, and five grandchildren. He had credited her support during a period of financial difficulty, calling her "my wife, my constant, my anchor".

When Jeffrey Archer dies, the final chapter of his publishing career lands a day later. He called Adam & Eve his last novel after five decades, promoted it until the end, and said he would keep working in other ways. For readers, the book now arrives as both a new release and a farewell.
