International Women's Day: 2024 Theme
This year's theme, "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress," coupled with the campaign theme "Inspire Inclusion," sets a clear agenda. The focus is on urging societies worldwide to recognize and harness the potential of including women in every aspect of development. It's a call to action, emphasizing the indispensable need to support women's growth, thereby accelerating overall progress.
International Women's Day 2024: History And Significance
The origins of International Women's Day traced back to New York in 1857, when female textile workers demonstrated against unfair working conditions and lower wages. This marked one of the earliest organized strikes by working women.
The momentum continued, and by 1911, 08 March was officially recognized as International Women's Day. The United Nations began celebrating the day on 08 March 1975, a recognition formalized by the UN General Assembly two years later.
International Women's Day 2024: Symbolism Through Colours
The day is also characterized by its distinctive colors: purple, green, and white. Each color holds a deep symbolic meaning. Purple stands for justice and dignity, green symbolizes hope, and white represents purity.
These colors, originating from the UK's Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1908, continue to represent the spirit of International Women's Day.
