Guru Nanak Jayanti 2023 Bank Holiday: Banks Will Be Shut In These States Today, Check List!
Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab holds immense significance in Sikhism. This day celebrates the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. He emphasized the oneness of God and the equality of all human beings. His teachings reject discrimination based on caste, creed, or gender, and promote the idea of a universal brotherhood.
Guru Nanak was born on April 15, 1469, in Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi (present-day Nankana Sahib in Pakistan). However, Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Kartik (usually in November) according to the Nanakshahi calendar.

This year, Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated on 27 November 2023. This day is also known as Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurpurab or Guru Nanak's Prakash Utsav. This day is also known as Prakash Utsav, which means the 'celebration of the light' referring to the divine light of Guru Nanak's wisdom that illuminated the world.
On this auspicious day, devotees gather in Gurudwaras to honor the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Payers are offered, hymns are recited from the holy scripture Guru Granth Sahib, and the message of oneness, unity, and peace is spread among everyone.
Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated as a public holiday in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Guru Nanak Jayanti 2023 Bank Holiday: Banks Will Be Shut In These States Today, Check List!
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released a state-wise list of where banks will remain closed today. Also, due to this occasion, schools, and government offices will remain closed in some states as well.
The bank holiday on this auspicious day is provided under the Negotiable Instruments (NI) Act, of 1881 under which the holidays are allocated under two categories- Real-time gross settlement holidays, and banks' closing of accounts.
The name of the states where banks will be closed- Chandigarh, Agartala, Dehradun, Aizwal, Belapur, Bhopal, Kohima, Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, Telangana, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Nagpur, Shimla, Shillong, Srinagar, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad-Andhra Pradesh, Imphal, Kochi, Panaji, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.
