From The Runway To The Stars: Prada Crafts NASA’s Sleekest Spacesuit For An Ultimate Makeover
What if your favourite luxury brand was not just a status symbol on Earth but also part of an astronaut's journey into space? Most of us dream of owning iconic pieces from brands like Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Versace, Dior and the like. These names have become the ultimate style statement, influencing our choices in perfumes, bags, sunglasses, and outfits.
The allure is so strong that many of us can't help but try them on in front of the mirror, even if we have no intention of buying. Now, these top brands have taken their impact to a whole new level: they're heading to space! In Milan, Prada and Axiom Space recently announced their collaboration on the Prada Axiom Spacesuit for NASA astronauts, set to debut in 2026. Let's know more about this groundbreaking partnership.

The Big Reveal
Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada's chief marketing officer, kicked off the International Astronautical Congress 2024 in Milan with a bold statement about a new era in space exploration. He compared it to the internet boom of the 1980s, noting that while access to space is currently exclusive, just like computing, prices will eventually drop, allowing more people to experience the thrill of adventure.
Bertelli was thrilled to unveil the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), Prada's stylish space suit designed in collaboration with Axiom Space for NASA's Artemis 3 mission to the moon in 2026. He emphasized that this venture is more about pushing boundaries than marketing, reflecting Prada's spirit of innovation as they take their first steps into the cosmos.
The Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU)
Talking about the AxEMU, which is actually an upgraded version of NASA's xEMU spacesuit used for work outside the International Space Station. The AxEMU is designed to be more flexible, efficient, and safe, making it perfect for exploring the lunar south pole. This area has extreme temperatures, and the fine regolith can cling to everything, so the suit is built to withstand those conditions for at least two hours in the chilly, permanently shaded spots, and it's good for up to eight hours of spacewalks or moonwalks!
The High-Tech Features Of The AxEMU Spacesuit
According to Russell Ralston, Axiom Space's executive VP of extravehicular activities, the biggest challenge in designing the AxEMU was creating the boots. While the suit is primarily meant for moonwalks, it can easily be adapted for spacewalks in low Earth orbit, like those from the International Space Station-just swap out the boots! The whole suit can be fitted in under two minutes and is designed to accommodate astronauts of all sizes, from the first to the 99th percentile.
Not just that, it's loaded with high-tech features, including redundancy systems, a diagnostic system, a carbon dioxide removal system, and cooling tech to keep things comfortable. The external interfaces hold control and communication tools, and the helmet and visor are designed for optimal visibility. Custom-made gloves also come with upgrades over those used in past missions, ensuring astronauts are ready for whatever space throws at them!
Designing the AxEMU with Prada
Prada's design team teamed up with Axiom Space to create materials for the AxEMU space suit that will not only keep astronauts safe in the harsh lunar environment but also spark excitement for future space exploration. Their expertise in innovative stitching combined functionality with the stylish aesthetics of the suit, ensuring both comfort and performance. The AxEMU features striking red lines on the sleeves, a nod to Prada's iconic style, which might play into future marketing strategies.
Since landing a $228 million contract for the Artemis program in 2022, Axiom has been working closely with NASA and other experts to develop the suit. The AxEMU has already undergone extensive testing, including underwater trials and reduced-gravity simulations at NASA's facilities. More testing, including astronaut trials, will happen in the coming year as they finalize the suit, which Axiom's president, Matt Ondler, assures will be ready for Artemis III in 2026, though there's a chance of a delay until 2028.They also plan to use the suit for upcoming lunar missions and their commercial space station.
Prada's AxEMU is more than just a spacesuit; it's a game-changer for fashion in space! With its cutting-edge design and comfort-driven features, this collaboration shows that luxury can reach new heights. As astronauts prepare to moonwalk in style, we can't help but get excited about the future of fashion in space. Who knew that venturing into the cosmos could look this good?
