2026 Long Weekend Calendar: Plan Your Leaves For The New Year Before Everyone Else
Just a few hours more and 2025 will finally wrap up. All these days. we all have been doing the usual-plans are being whispered over late-night chats where that familiar New Year's Eve thought kicks in - "This year, I'll travel more." Good news: The New Year 2026 is actually on your side.
With smart planning and a little awareness, you can stretch your leaves into real breaks without burning through your balance. Here's a clear look at the best long weekends in India in 2026 so you can start planning before everyone else does.
January Sets The Tone Early
2026 opens with a gift.
January 1 (Thursday) - New Year's Day
Take Friday, January 2 off and you've got a four-day break (Jan 1-4). A perfect excuse for a quick getaway or a proper reset after the holidays.
Republic Day - Monday, January 26
A clean three-day weekend (Jan 24-26) with no leave required. Short trip? Family time? Sleep recovery? Your call.
Spring Brings Easy Long Weekends
Good Friday - April 3 (Friday)
A straight three-day weekend (April 3-5).
Buddha Purnima / May Day - May 1 (Friday)
Another neat Friday-to-Sunday break (May 1-3) that's perfect for a pre-summer escape.
Mid-Year Breaks Without The Stress
Muharram - June 26 (Friday) (subject to moon sighting)
Lands you a June 26-28 long weekend. Great timing before the monsoon fully settles in many parts of the country.
Independence Day Is Tricky
August 15 (Saturday)
This one sits on a weekend, so it doesn't give you a long break by default. You may want to save your leaves here unless your workplace offers a compensatory off.

October Is Where Planning Really Pays Off
October is the month where smart leave strategy makes a big difference.
Gandhi Jayanti - October 2 (Friday)
A simple three-day weekend (Oct 2-4).
Dussehra - October 20 (Tuesday)
Take Monday, October 19 off and you get a four-day break (Oct 17-20). One leave, solid payoff.
Diwali Can Turn Into A Proper Break
Diwali - November 8 (Sunday)
On its own, it's not generous. But if you take Monday and Tuesday (Nov 9-10) off, you unlock a five-day break (Nov 7-11). This is one of the strongest leave stretches of the year.
The Year Ends on a Calm Note
Christmas - December 25 (Friday)
A natural three-day weekend (Dec 25-27) to slow down before the year signs off.
Quick Leave Planning Snapshot
If you plan well, here's what you can realistically get:
- 1 leave day → 4 days off (New Year)
- Zero leave days → multiple 3-day weekends
- 2 leave days → up to 5 days off (Diwali)
This assumes a standard Saturday-Sunday weekend and central government holiday alignment. State-specific holidays can add even more flexibility depending on where you live.
Before You Lock Your Plans
A few things worth keeping in mind:
- Islamic holidays depend on moon sighting and may shift by a day.
- State holidays vary - check your local calendar for extra wins.
- Flights, trains and hotels get expensive fast around long weekends. Early bookings matter.
With a little foresight, the calendar does most of the work for you. Mark the dates now, plan your leaves early, and let next year offer you more resets, the kind that actually feel like breaks. Because starting the year prepared beats scrambling for time off later.
