Mary Magdalene's Vases Of Holy Oil Discovered
Believed by many to be the woman described in the Gospel of St Luke who anointed the feet of Jesus with oil and then wiped them with her tears and hair.
She was also thought to be the prostitute and was present at the foot of the Cross when Jesus was crucified and was also the first witness to see Christ following his Resurrection.
The unopened vases dated to the first century AD and were conserved in mud at the bottom of a swimming pool in Magdala's thermal complex. The town is situated on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee and Mary Magdalene is mentioned several times throughout the Bible.
According to the archaeologists of the Franciscan academic society Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, they have discovered vases linked to the historic lady.
"The mud-filled condition of the site allowed us to find these truly extraordinary objects, which were intact and sealed and still contain greasy substances," said Father Stefano De Luca who is leading the dig. "We think these are balms and perfumes and if chemical analysis confirms this, they could be similar to those used by Mary Magdalene in the Gospels to anoint the feet of Christ," he added.
According to Father Stefano De Luca, "The discovery of these vases is very important. We have in our hands the cosmetic products from the time of Jesus." "It's very likely that the woman who anointed Christ's feet used these products, or ones similar in organic composition and quality," he added.
This new discovery is sure to pour light in to life and history on one of the most powerfully influential figure in the History of mankind, Jesus Christ.
