Gandhi, Jolies pictures to feature in new Vogue-style Bible
Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela"s pictures have been selected to illustrate the importance of doing good deeds in the glossy coffee table tome entitled Bible Illuminated: The Book.
Swedish ad man Dag Soderberg has decided to repackage the book in the style of Vogue. The book will also feature pictures of Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie and U2 frontman Bono.
The publishers selected these personalities after asking the Swedish public which famous figures in modern times represented goodness and compassion. Images chosen for the book also include a picture featuring a shirtless male model striding through the waves, and a black-and-white close-up of a couple about to kiss.
The New Testament version of the book is published in the US at the end of this month, and there are plans for a UK release in the coming months. Its publishers have revealed that The Book accounted for a 50 per cent rise in Sweden"s Bible sales when it was released in 2007 in the country.
Soderberg said that his aim was to make the Bible more accessible. "Most people have issues with the Bible. They have never gotten into it. They don''t find it accessible. But it's our history, our heritage. And for most of us, we relate to it more than we think. Religious or not, it shapes much of our moral codes," the Telegraph quoted him as saying. His goal is "to make a version of the Bible that people want to pick up, instead of hide away or just place on a bookshelf
