Munnabhai Now Makes Cane-Chairs!
Pune, Aug 8 (UNI) After playing the lovable doctor and the ingenuous don on screen, convict Sanjay Dutt has in real life stepped into the shoes of a cane-chair maker.
Sanjay Dutt began his routine by learning to make cane chairs after spending a week in the Yerwada jail, where he was transferred from Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail to serve 6 years in prison by TADA court under the Arms Act on July 31.
Sanjay chose to make cane chairs over other options like carpentry, gardening or farming after he spent some time in the carpentry division in the jail yesterday.
As per rules, his labour too will be compensated, as an unskilled inmate he gets a daily wage of Rs 12.50. A semi-skilled inmate gets Rs 17.50, while a highly skilled inmate gets upto Rs 25.50. The money goes to the inmate on completion of the jail term.
Sanjay would have to work for 7 hours as per the jail manual. He will have to follow the jail routine that includes the toughest part of waking up at 0530 hrs. Thereafter, breakfast by 0730 hrs and then work. Lunch is between 1000 hrs and 1100 hrs, while dinner as early as 1730 hrs, which the inmates can have till 1830 hrs. He will receive a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 with which he can buy items of daily use such as soaps, shaving blades and other essentials.
The inmates can rest or do whatever they like between 1200 and 1500 hrs before working for another one and half hours. By 1630 hrs, the work hours are over and the day gets over with dinner.
Meanwhile, Inspector General (Prisons) Satish Mathur denied media reports that rules were being flouted for high profile inmates like Sanjay Dutt, whose sister Namrata, brother-in law Kumar Gaurav and friend Manyata visited him on Monday.
Mr Mathur said "My officers have not violated any rules. The car carrying the visitors was allowed into the jail premises for security reasons.".
Dutt's bail plea will come up for hearing in the Supreme Court on Friday.
