$5 Million Emerald On Sale

Dubai, Oct 11 (UNI) The largest known carved emerald in the world worth 5 million dollars will be up for grabs at the Dubai International Fine Art and Antiques Fair to be held here from December 12 to 15.

The stunning emerald, carved by Burmese master carver Aung Nyein, depicts 'Abhaya, Standing Buddha." It is 15.4cm tall and weighs 2,620 carats (542 grams). ('Abhaya" means 'no fear" and this sculpture shows the Buddha giving reassurance and protection to his followers).

The sculpture has been certified a natural emerald by the GRS (Gem Research Swiss Lab) and is probabaly one of the largest documented emeralds in the world. The emerald owned by Siddarth Gallery of Bangkok is larger than any emerald in major museums and collections such as The British Museum of Natural History, The Museum of Natural History, New York, Washington, D.C., The Crown Jewels of Iran and The Al-Sabah Collection in the Kuwaiti National Museum, Khaleej Times reported.

The Buddha image was carved in the ancient Sukothai style of Haarm Yhaart, which was Buddha"s admonition to family members to stop quarrelling amongst themselves, similar to the Standing Buddhas of Bamiyan, Afghanistan, the statement added.

Leading galleries from Paris, Rome, Milan, Moscow, Tokyo, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, Vienna, Brussels and Florence will also display a wide range of the world"s finest antiques and works of art in the event. More than 20,000 individual exhibits will be on display at the fair.

The Dubai International Fine Art and Antiques Fair is part of Dubai International Jewellery week, which will be held at 12-15 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
