Ambika suggests inclusion of museum circuit

By Super Admin

Stressing for greater vigilance towards preserving India's vast cultural heritage, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni announced setting up a National Children's Museum in the capital and suggested a museum circuit as part of tourist itinerary.

Speaking at a book release function of Satyen Mahapatra's book ''Delhi: A city of Museum'' at the national Museum, she said unlike many other countries where museums were a major source of attraction for people, not many people in India visited museums and a book of this kind will create their interest to do so. She said a museum circuit as part of the tourist itinerary could also be initiated.

Appreciating the dedicated efforts which had gone into compiling the book, she said this was the kind of book which people look forward to. We need more such museums and more people to write about them thus bringing to light India's vast cultural resources.

State Education and Culture Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said they would like to re-establish the link between schools and museums and a book of this nature could be of immense help. He said the Delhi government was planning a "Coffee table" book on Delhi's history, places of historical interest where they would now like to include museums.

Art and culture critic Kapil Yatsyayan, who wrote the foreword in the book, said ''Mr Mahapatra has presented an admirably easily readable account of ten museums of Delhi, with smooth narrative of the history of establishment of the museums, their collections with particular attention to some outstanding exhibits. The book is a literal walk thorough in words...his enthusiam filters thorugh the pages-it's infectitious.''
