20 Minutes Under The Sea : AI Paves The Way For Conversation With A Humpback
Have you ever stood by the ocean, listening to the waves, and wondered what it would be like to communicate with the creatures beneath the surface? While it might sound like a dream, recent advancements in artificial intelligence are bringing us closer to that dream. In just 20 minutes under the sea, AI is making it possible to understand and interact with humpback whales in ways we never thought possible. Whale of a Conversation
In an incredible moment off the coast of Alaska, scientists had what they're calling a "conversation" with a humpback whale named Twain. Dr. Brenda McCowan and her team from UC Davis, known as Whale-SETI (Whale Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) have been diving deep into how these magnificent creatures communicate. Their goal? To crack the code of whale chatter and potentially use that knowledge in the search for life beyond our planet.
Twain Joins the Conversation
Using an underwater speaker, Dr. McCowan and her Whale-SETI team played a recorded humpback "contact" call, and to their surprise, Twain the Humpback whale swam right up to their boat, ready to respond! For about 20 minutes, the curious humpback circled them, perfectly timing his calls with the recordings.
"We believe this is the first such communicative exchange between humans and humpback whales in the humpback 'language,'" Dr. McCowan shared, and you could feel the excitement as the researchers witnessed this groundbreaking interaction using the whale's own signals. Talk about making waves!
Whale Wisdom
The Whale-SETI team is on a mission to create filters that can detect intelligent signals, which they believe could aid in the search for extraterrestrial life. By diving into the communication methods of humpback whales, they're hoping to uncover patterns that might also apply to signals from outer space.
Decoding Signals
The amazing behaviour of Twain reinforces a key idea in the hunt for extraterrestrial life, the assumption that aliens might want to make contact with us humans. Dr. Laurance Doyle from the SETI Institute pointed out that this notion is backed by the way humpback whales engage with scientists. By studying these whales, the Whale-SETI team aims to figure out how to detect and comprehend intelligent signals, whether they originate from the ocean's depths or the vastness of space.
Their findings are detailed in the journal PeerJ in an article titled "Interactive Bioacoustic Playback as a Tool for Detecting and Exploring Nonhuman Intelligence: 'Conversing' with an Alaskan Humpback Whale." The researchers plan to use maths and AI, including information theory and machine learning, to unravel the complexities of whale communication, hoping to uncover the rules and structures behind their messages.
The Whale-SETI team is committed to advancing our understanding of humpback whales, not just through audio communication but also by exploring non-audio methods like bubble rings where this unique initiative blends marine biology with the quest for extraterrestrial intelligence.
Humpback whales, known for their remarkable size and complex social behaviours, are gradually recovering from the brink of extinction but still face threats from human activities and climate change.
