Safety Tips For Cleaning Lampshades:
- Never remove the lampshade as soon as you switch off the light. The bulb still remains hot and it might just scald your hands.
- Don't try to clean the bulb with a wet cloth at once. If it is still hot then it will burst into pieces and may injure you or others.
- Disconnect all the wires before you remove the lampshade because a short circuit have give you an electrical shock.
- Never touch the lampshade with wet hands because water conducts electricity.
How To Clean Lampshades?
- Mostly all lampshades are removable so remove the cover from over the bulb or other source of light to clean it extensively.
- Make sure you do this removing carefully because lampshades are usually delicate and you may end up damaging it if you do the job roughly.
- Give the lampshade fabric a preliminary dusting before you do anything else. It is not everyday that we clean lights in your house. So a lot of dust and sometimes dust mights accumulate on the shades. This dust is loose and settles down if you add water or soap so it is best to get rid of it with a clean dry cloth.
- How you clean it will also depend on the type of lampshade you are using. Different lampshades are made of different materials so you can clean them all in the same way.
- Cloth lampshades are easy to wash because they can just be washed like we wash clothes; with water and soap. Obviously you cannot scrub them like you scrub your clothes but otherwise the basic procedure is the same.
- Parchment lampshades are really in these days and they pose a problem while cleaning. You cannot put any liquid on it or else it will just wilt like paper. The only way is to brush them with a soft brush. Also, clean parchment lampshades more often so that the dust doesn't accumulate on it. Clean them one in two weeks for sure.
- Cane is a type of lampshade material that that is most versatile when it comes to cleaning. Too much moisture is not good for it but you can clean it with a wet cloth after squeezing out the extra water. You can apply varnish on it to make it look new and also brush of the dirt with a shoe brush!
