Common Home Decor Mistakes

By Staff

There are few common mistakes people commit while decorating their homes like, color schemes are too bland, furniture is lined up against the walls, pictures are placed too high on the wall, collections are not displayed together etc... Many of these simple mistakes can be easily corrected with a few alterations. While the decor in your home should reflect your personality, it should also be pleasing to the eye. Here are some common home decorating mistakes that you should have to avoid at your home.

One common home decorating mistake is too many patterns and colors. While color and patterns are a welcome compliment in any room of your home, it is important to pick a color combination using two or three color shades with one or two patterns at most.

Once you have decided on your color scheme, then pick a pattern or two to compliment your furniture.

Arranging furniture in awkward patterns is, of course a mistake. Arranging the furnitures in the right fashion will make the room looking good and also will help you to arrange easy pathways through your room. Scattering the accessories and collections are another home decor mistake. If you have a collection, group it together. When individual pieces are scattered throughout the house, the collection loses its impact.

It is a mistake using incorrect lighting in the room. Of course, the little lamps will be cut. But they may not provide enough light in your rooms. Make sure to buy lamps and light bulbs which ease the strain to see things. And as for the shadows, you can try frosted bulbs to soften the harsh angles.

A big pet peeve for most interior decorators is clear plastic furniture covers. These are not only ugly but extremely uninviting. Although they serve as a great protector, they are uncomfortable and noisy. Always try to remove the plastic covers from your furnitures.

If you are using area rugs in your house, then stay away from the floating area rugs dilemma. Area rugs should not be placed in the middle of the room by themselves. This not only poses a danger to people walking across the room who might trip on the edge of the rug, but it also looks out of place.

Putting all the furniture against the wall, again is a common mistake. Unless you have a paranoia about having someone behind your back, move your furniture further into the room. It adds more interest and looks less like a perfect line-up. Do not hang artworks too high. Try placing your artwork at or below eye level. Unless it is over a fireplace mantel, try not to make your visitors look up to view your prints or paintings.

Having a lop-sided room is a mistake you may make. Don't put all the big, heavy furniture or dark colors on one side of the room. It will feel like you are on the deck of an old ship. Distribute the pieces evenly to bring balance to the room.

By correcting these simple home decor mistakes, you can easily update your home and keep it looking new, warm and inviting for your family, friends and guests to enjoy.
