An instance of a potentially deadly fungus caused by plants has been discovered in a 61-year-old plant mycologist from Kolkata. He complained of hoarseness of voice, difficulty swallowing, a sore throat, and fatigue for three months prior to his diagnosis [1].

It has been reported that a plant mycologist in Kolkata has become the first person to be diagnosed with a fungal illness usually associated with plants.

• No history of diabetes, HIV infection, renal disease, chronic disease, immunosuppressive drug intake, or trauma was present in the patient.
• This rare infection may be caused by recurrent exposure to decaying material [2].
• He was diagnosed with a neck abscess and a surgical procedure was performed to drain the abscess. If not caught and treated promptly, these types of abscesses can block airways and cause life-threatening infections.
• An X-ray examination indicated no unusual findings, and the patient was prescribed anti-fungal medication. The patient was fine after two years of follow-up, and no evidence of recurrence has been found.
• According to the researchers, this case highlights the potential for environmental plant fungi to cause disease in humans, and it emphasises the need for molecular techniques to identify the causative fungi.
• Macroscopic and microscopic examinations revealed the presence of this fungal infection, but the nature of the infection, its potential to disseminate, and so forth could not be determined.

What Are These Deadly Fungi?

Known as Chondrostereum purpureum, it causes silver leaf disease in plants, particularly those in the rose family. This is the first time a fungus has caused disease in a human. Conventional methods (microscopy and culture) failed to identify the fungus [3].
