What’s Inside Your Fridge? You Won’t Believe These Common Foods Should Never Be Refrigerated!
We all have that routine, putting everything in the fridge to keep it fresh, but some foods actually do better when left out. Yes, the fact is you might be chilling things that shouldn't be cold at all. So, let's take a look at the foods you've been refrigerating that actually prefer a warmer spot in your kitchen.
Health Guru Voices Health Concerns
Health guru Cory Rodriguez, known for his social media presence as Health WithCory, has revealed six common foods that are often stored incorrectly and how to keep them at their best. In a viral TikTok video, Cory highlighted that many people make the mistake of refrigerating certain items, which can impact their taste and quality.
Items To Be Kept Away From The Fridge
For instance, honey should never be kept in the fridge, as cold temperatures can cause it to crystallise and seize up. Instead, store it at room temperature for optimal consistency. Similarly, while tomatoes are often refrigerated, it's actually better to keep them on the counter. The cold can make them dull and mealy, affecting their flavour and texture.
Cory also pointed out that coffee shouldn't be stored in the fridge either. Doing so can cause it to absorb unwanted odours and moisture, compromising its flavour. Instead, it should be kept in a cool, dry place, away from any humidity.
He also revealed that hot sauce is another food many of us store incorrectly by keeping it in the fridge. In his viral TikTok video, he explained that the vinegar in hot sauce is enough to prevent bacteria growth, meaning it doesn't need refrigeration. Keeping it at room temperature also helps preserve the strength of the peppers, allowing the flavour to remain more potent.
He also advises against refrigerating potatoes, as the cooler temperatures can break down the starches, affecting their flavour. Cory recommends storing them in a dark, cool place, but not somewhere too cold. When it comes to garlic and onions, he pointed out that these should never be stored in the fridge either. He reminded viewers that they were bought outside of the fridge for a reason, and should stay there to maintain their best quality.
Netizens React
Viewers were quick to react to the video, sharing their surprise and thoughts. One TikTok user, shocked to learn that some people refrigerate coffee, asked: "Who puts coffee in the fridge... Is that a thing?" Another user agreed with the tomato tip, saying: "Yes, tomatoes taste better kept on the counter." A third commenter added, "Eggs too. If the supermarket doesn't have them in the fridge, you don't need to either."
On an endnote, Cory Rodriguez also clarified that while these storage tips are considered the "ideal" way to store each food, factors like the climate and the temperature of your home can influence how well they work. The health expert highlighted that hot and humid conditions may affect the preservation of some items. With that being said, it's advisable to consider your environment when applying these tips to keep your food in the best possible state.
