What Is FLiRT, A New COVID-19 Variant In US? How Dangerous Is It? Symptoms, Precautions You Need To Follow
The recent emergence of FLiRT, a collection of new SARS-CoV-2 variants in the US, has sparked discussions and concerns among health experts. Originating from Omicron's JN.1 lineage, these variants, notably KP.2 and KP 1.1, demonstrate a higher rate of infection compared to their predecessors.
They are quickly spreading across the United States, with mutations that potentially make them more transmissible than their predecessors. Despite their quick spread, experts note that the symptoms of these variants are similar to those seen in previous Omicron infections.

What Does FLiRT Mean?
According to the IDSA, the term FLiRT comes from the technical names of the mutations found in these variants. These variants, especially KP.2, have shown a capacity for increased spread. Notably, KP.2 has surpassed the JN.1 variant in the US.
However, despite its rapid dissemination, hospitalization rates have not seen a significant increase. KP.1.1, while also part of the FLiRT group, has not spread as extensively as KP.2.
Symptoms Related To FLiRT
Experts believe that symptoms of FLiRT variants don't significantly deviate from those associated with earlier strains of COVID-19. They include sore throat, cough, congestion, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, and occasionally, fever, chills, or loss of taste and smell.
Notably, the loss of taste or smell is less common with Omicron variants than with earlier versions of the virus.
Is FLiRT Dangerous? Precautions To Follow
There is less cause for alarm in India, given the widespread immunity acquired through infection and a comprehensive vaccination program. Unlike in the US, where mRNA vaccines were common, India's immunity landscape is shaped by a mix of vaccination and infection-induced immunity.
The importance of preparing for potential FLiRT spread, despite its current absence in India, is necessary. This involves maintaining vigilance through enhanced testing, targeted vaccinations, and adherence to preventive measures is crucial to tackle it.
Also, experts suggest the importance of COVID-friendly protocols such as proper handwashing, wearing masks, and paying extra attention to vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with comorbid conditions.
