Rare Eye Surgery
Chennai : Leading Eye Healthcare provider Dr Agarwal's Eye Hospital today claimed to have successfully performed for the first time in the world, an Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implant procedure on a four-year-old girl using tissue glue technology to restore normal vision.
Talking to newspersons here today on the 'new, path-breaking' surgical procedure, Hospital Joint Managing Director Amar Agarwal, 'who invented the procedure,' said it was done on Anandhi whose right
eye suffered severe injury while bursting crackers during Diwali last year. Since then she has been having problem with her vision.
Dr Amar said, for the first time in the world, tissue glue has been used to fix IOL in an eye where such lens could not be used.
"Anandhi underwent emergency surgery for removal of the lens which was badly damaged and routine IOL, which was specific for such cases.
"When she came up for follow-up treatment after a month, it was found there was a decenteration of IOL." Under general anaesthesia, Dr Amar Agarwal removed the existing IOL and placed the IOL using Glued IOL Technique.
He said treatment of damaged IOL was a challenge for s and for most of these cases, nothing could be done.
"With this glue technology, now we can provide treatment for patients whose intraocular lens capsule are missing. The glue usually used is fibrin or tissue glue made from serum thereby enhancing visual acuity," Dr Amar Agarwal said.
