Unraveling Dengue: The Battle Against 'Breakbone Fever' in India
An overview of denguen, a prevalent mosquito-borne viral infection also known as 'break bone fever,' particularly focusing on its impact and management within the tropical climate of India. It further explores the symptoms, severity levels, preventive measures and importance of public awareness about this disease.
Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. India, with its hot and humid climate, has been battling this disease for many years.
The term 'Dengue' is derived from the Swahili phrase 'Ka-dinga pepo', which describes a sudden cramp-like seizure caused by an evil spirit. However, it is also known by another name - Breakbone Fever.

Why Dengue is Known as Breakbone Fever?
The name 'Breakbone Fever' might sound dramatic but it accurately depicts the intense joint and muscle pain experienced by those infected with the disease. This pain can be so severe that it feels like one's bones are breaking or cracking from within.
This acute physical discomfort led to dengue being colloquially referred to as 'breakbone fever'.
Symptoms of Dengue: More than Just Bone Pain
While extreme bone and joint pain are characteristic symptoms of dengue, there are other signs too that make this disease particularly distressing. High fever, headache (especially behind the eyes), rash over most of the body, nausea and vomiting are common symptoms accompanying dengue fever.
In more severe cases known as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), bleeding, blood plasma leakage or even organ damage can occur.

Prevention & Control Measures against Dengue in India
In India where dengue outbreaks occur frequently due to favorable climatic conditions for Aedes mosquitoes (the vector responsible for transmitting the virus), prevention and control measures have become critical public health strategies.
These include effective vector control methods such as:
- eliminating mosquito breeding sites
- using repellents
- wearing long-sleeved clothes
- installing window screens etc.,
- community awareness programs about early symptom recognition and prompt treatment-seeking behaviour.

Conclusion: Unraveling The Mystery Behind The Name
'Breakbone Fever', though a terrifying moniker does serve an important purpose – it highlights how debilitating this illness can be if left unchecked or untreated.
As we continue our fight against diseases like Dengue in India and across the globe, understanding their nature including why they were named becomes essential not just for healthcare professionals but also for general public awareness.
