Shabana Azmi Tests Positive for Swine Flu (H1N1) After Joining Student Protests

Three days at Jantar Mantar, standing shoulder to shoulder with students demanding education reform. That's where Shabana Azmi has spent much of her week - until swine flu pulled her off the ground.

The veteran actor and long-time activist has been diagnosed with H1N1 and advised complete bed rest, forcing her to miss today's leg of the students' protest she has so visibly backed.

Her team confirmed the diagnosis in a statement.

"Shabana ji was meant to go to the protest today, but she has contracted swine flu with 102 fever and has been advised rest by the doctor."

She is currently running a temperature of 102 degrees and has entered five-day isolation on medical advice.

A Protest She Refused To Watch From The Sidelines

Azmi, 74, has not been a distant supporter of this movement. She has been on the ground at Jantar Mantar, walking alongside protesters, sharing footage and commentary from the site on her own social media.

In one post, she described being helped up to the protest site by younger supporters, backing a demand to raise GDP allocation towards education, public health, and women's empowerment.

Her diagnosis also means she will miss a rally planned at Mumbai's Shivaji Park, where she had been expected to appear.

The Second Time Her Body Has Pushed Back

This is not the first health scare the actor has faced during the agitation. Earlier in the protests, she reportedly suffered an asthma attack after tear gas was used during one of the marches, and had to be escorted to an emergency medical centre when her condition worsened.

She returned to the protest soon after. This time, the illness has forced a full pause.

Isolated, But Still Speaking Up

Azmi used the time in isolation to send a message to supporters in Mumbai, acknowledging she couldn't be there in person.

"I was meant to join your protest yesterday, but I've come down with H1N1 and need to remain in isolation for the next five days."

She added that she was following the movement closely through updates from students on the ground, many of whom, she noted, were experiencing the weight of collective protest for the first time.

Alongside her message, she shared Naujawan, a poem written by her father, the poet and lyricist Kaifi Azmi - tying his words to the moment unfolding on the streets today.

Azmi's illness hasn't quietened her voice, even if it has kept her off the ground for now. Alongside her husband, lyricist Javed Akhtar, she has been among the more prominent names from Hindi cinema to publicly stand with the students, from writing to the Prime Minister to walking in the Chalo Sansad march towards Parliament. Her five days of isolation are a pause, not a retreat - and given her track record through this movement, few expect her to stay off the ground for long.
