Hing is the Indian name of asafetida. It is a spice used in some Indian dishes like sambar and dal. It has a peculiar smell but when added to any dish gives a different flavour. It is good for digestion.

This spice is actually an extract from a herb and is generally available in its powdered version or in the form of small stones. It is a nerve stimulant, laxative, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-flatulent and expectorant. According to some sources, it also contains nutrients like riboflavin, carotene, niacin, iron, phosphorous, calcium, carbohydrates, fibre and protein.
