A 90-Second Cool-Down Reset Before Bed Could Improve Deep Sleep, According to Expert
We all know we should be sleeping better. But between late-night scrolling, long workdays, stress, and inconsistent routines, deep sleep often feels harder to come by than it should. That's where sleep coaches are pointing to something surprisingly simple:
a 90-second cool-down reset that helps your body switch into proper sleep mode.
No gadgets. No supplements. Just a small temperature shift at the right time.
We spoke to Deepti Sharma, Fitness expert and Director, MultiFit, who explained the benefits of a 90-second cool-down reset for sleep and how to try it.
What is a "Cool-Down Reset"?
Your body naturally lowers its temperature as it prepares for sleep. That drop is one of the key signals your brain looks for before entering deeper sleep cycles.
"The problem is that most of us unknowingly disrupt this process. Warm showers, heated rooms, heavy meals, late workouts, or even bright screens can keep the body feeling "on." The cool-down reset helps nudge your temperature back in the right direction," explained Sharma.
How It Works
"According to sleep specialists, exposing areas like your hands, feet, or face to cold water or a cold compress for about 90 seconds can help trigger this response. It's brief, intentional cooling, just enough to tell your nervous system it's time to slow down," said Sharma.
Why it Supports Deep Sleep
Deep sleep isn't just about feeling exhausted. It's about your body receiving the right physiological cues.
A small temperature drop can:
- Calm the nervous system
- Lower heart rate
- Reduce metabolic activity
- Help the brain move into sleep cycles more efficiently
When these signals align, falling asleep becomes easier and staying in deeper sleep becomes more likely.
How to try it
Pick one of these before bed:
- Splash cool water on your face
- Rinse your hands or feet under cold water
- Place a cold pack on your neck or wrists
- Step into a cooler room for a minute or two
- You don't need to feel cold, just refreshed.
Bottomline
Sharma concluded, "Quality sleep is non-negotiable for real fitness. Better sleep means better recovery, stronger workouts, and more consistent progress. This 90-second reset isn't a miracle fix, but it's a small, science-backed habit that can make a noticeable difference over time."
Sleep smarter.
Recover better.
Move stronger.
