Man Dies After Eating Pasta Kept Outside Fridge: What Is Fried Rice Syndrome?
We've all had those moments when we've questioned the safety of that leftover food we found in the back of the fridge. But have you ever wondered just how dangerous it can be to indulge in that old food?
In the age of TikTok, where viral trends come and go, one story that resurfaced in 2019 has captured the internet's attention, and it's a chilling reminder of the importance of food safety.

A 20-year-old student from Brussels, Belgium, tragically lost his life after consuming a seemingly harmless meal - five-day-old pasta. Yes, you read that right; it's a story that defies common sense.
What Happened?
So, what exactly happened? In 2019, a student from Brussels, Belgium, decided to enjoy some prepped spaghetti. He had cooked and stored the pasta on a Sunday, with plans to reheat and devour it five days later. But here's where things went terribly wrong - instead of keeping his meal snugly tucked away in the fridge, he left it out on the kitchen counter.
Fast forward to that fateful evening, and he started experiencing severe symptoms, including nausea, abdominal pain, a throbbing headache, diarrhoea, and vomiting. The outcome? Tragically, he lost his life at 4 a.m., just ten hours after eating the contaminated pasta.

An autopsy revealed that he suffered from moderate centrilobular liver necrosis, which eventually led to organ failure. However, the exact cause of death remained elusive, primarily due to complications from the delayed autopsy.
What Caused It?
Now, you might be wondering what caused this young man's untimely demise. The National Reference Laboratory for Food-Borne Outbreaks conducted an investigation and uncovered a significant presence of a bacteria called Bacillus cereus in the pasta.
This little villain can wreak havoc on your health. It's known for causing food poisoning and a range of serious health issues. In the most severe cases, it can even lead to liver failure.

What Is "Fried Rice Syndrome"?
"Fried Rice Syndrome" might sound like an obscure and bizarre condition, but it's essentially a case of food poisoning caused by the Bacillus cereus bacteria.
This syndrome gets its name from the common association with reheated fried rice dishes, but as we've seen, it can be triggered by improperly stored and reheated foods.

On A Final Note...
As strange as it may sound, the case of the 5-day-old pasta teaches us a valuable lesson - food safety is not to be taken lightly. The Fried Rice Syndrome, as we now know it, is a serious matter.
