Mahashivratri 2026: Expert Explains The Science Behind Fasting, Vigil and Longevity
On 15th February 2026, millions across India and the world will observe Mahashivratri, the Great Night of Shiva. Temples will remain open. Devotees will fast, meditate, chant, and stay awake in quiet vigil. For many, it is a sacred tradition. For others, it is cultural identity.
"As a cancer surgeon and longevity specialist , I see something else: Mahashivratri is an annual rehearsal in nervous system regulation and this may be one of the most powerful and underappreciated tools in modern health," said Dr Arpit Bansal, Cancer Surgeon, Gut & Longevity Specialist, Founder, Four-Body, Five-Frequency Biohacking Blueprint, and Blue Mind Movement (Blue Mind India).
A World in Sympathetic Overdrive
Modern life operates at a relentless speed.
- Constant notifications.
- Chronic stress.
- Late-night screens.
- Endless cognitive stimulation.
"Medically, we call this sympathetic overdrive when the body's fight-or-flight system remains chronically activated. Over time, this contributes to sleep disruption, digestive imbalance, inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, anxiety, and cardiovascular risk. In my clinical work as a gut and longevity physician, I see the consequences daily. The body rarely breaks suddenly. It slowly erodes under sustained stress chemistry," added Dr Bansal.
This can be explained using two simple states :
- Red Mind: reactive, stressed, survival-driven.
- Blue Mind: calm, regulated, responsive.
Longevity does not require eliminating stress entirely. It requires learning how to return to 'Blue Mind' efficiently and consistently. Mahashivratri, interestingly, is structured around exactly that transition.
The Night Vigil as a Biological Reset
On Mahashivratri, people voluntarily :
- Fast or reduce food intake
- Stay awake consciously
- Chant or meditate
- Reduce sensory overload
From a scientific perspective, this combination is powerful.
"Short periods of fasting enhance metabolic flexibility and insulin sensitivity. Slow, rhythmic breathing, often practiced through chanting, improves vagal tone , strengthening the parasympathetic nervous system. Meditation enhances heart rate variability (HRV), a measurable marker of resilience," explained Dr Bansal.
Even the act of staying awake intentionally rather than passively consuming stimulation increases awareness of circadian rhythms. In simple terms, the night interrupts automatic stress loops. It shifts the body from Red Mind toward Blue Mind and that shift has measurable health benefits.
The Symbolism of the Trishul
Shiva is often depicted holding a trishul or trident.
"Traditionally, it represents creation, preservation, and dissolution. Psychologically, it can also symbolise alignment between thought, emotion, and action. When these three are fragmented, internal stress rises. Decision-making suffers. The gut tightens, and sleep becomes shallow. When they align, coherence emerges, and coherence reduces the physiological stress load," said Dr Bansal.
Ancient symbolism and modern physiology meet here in a surprisingly practical way.
Refined Potential and Human Choice
In quantum physics , the symbol ψ (psi) represents the potential of what could happen before a final outcome emerges. When modified with a small wave symbol above it , called a tilde (~), it becomes ψ̃, pronounced "psi-tilde," indicating a refined or transformed state of potential.
While this is a physics term, it offers a helpful metaphor for human life. At any moment , multiple responses are available. We can escalate conflict or stabilise it. We can amplify stress or regulate it. Our internal state determines which possibility becomes reality. When the nervous system is chaotic, options narrow. When it is regulated, options expand," added Dr Bansal.
Mahashivratri creates the conditions for that refinement.
The Four Bodies and the Fifth Frequency
Through my work developing the Four-Body, Five-Frequency Biohacking Blueprint, I describe health as integration across four domains:
- Earth - the physical body
- Water - the emotional body
- Air the - mental body
- Fire - the purpose-driven body
"When these four are regulated and aligned, a fifth state emerges, which I call the quantum frequency of coherence. Not mystical, but experiential. It is the state where clarity, resilience, and flow become natural rather than forced. Mahashivratri, in many ways, is a collective experiment in moving toward that state," shared Dr Bansal.
Longevity Is the Management of Entropy
In biology, entropy refers to disorder. Ageing is the gradual accumulation of disorder within cells and systems. Longevity medicine seeks to slow that process through metabolic optimisation, gut health, hormonal balance and inflammation control. But one of the most powerful interventions remains simple: stillness. Moments where cortisol drops, breath slows, and attention stabilises.
"I often remind people that resilience begins with regulation. You cannot biohack your way out of chronic chaos. You must first create coherence," added Dr Bansal.
Bottomline
Dr Bansal concluded, "Mahashivratri is not only a religious festival , but it's also an invitation. An invitation to slow down , to dissolve noise , to shift from Red Mind to Blue Mind, to refine internal potential. Because health is not only about adding years to life, it is about stabilising the state from which life unfolds, and sometimes the most powerful longevity intervention is simply lowering the noise, align the bodies, choose coherence."
