Can Summer Heat Affect PCOS?
Summer heat doesn't cause PCOS-but it can make the symptoms feel worse.
According to Dr Darshni, this happens indirectly due to:
- Dehydration
- Increased metabolic stress
- Hormonal fluctuations
The body is already working harder to regulate temperature in extreme heat. Add PCOS into the mix, and it can start affecting how your hormones and metabolism behave.
Why Your Period Cycle May Feel More Irregular
If your cycle feels slightly more unpredictable during summer, you're not imagining it.
Heat can increase cortisol levels (your stress hormone), which may interfere with ovulation. This can lead to:
- Delayed periods
- Missed cycles
- Increased irregularity
Doctors recommend tracking your cycle consistently and being extra mindful during summer. Missing more than two cycles should not be ignored.
Fatigue Feels Worse? Here's Why
Fatigue is already a common PCOS symptom. Summer can amplify it further.
Dr Darshni explains that tiredness during this time can be due to:
- Heat exposure
- Dehydration
- Insulin resistance
- Electrolyte imbalance
You might notice energy crashes, low motivation, or a constant feeling of exhaustion-even without doing much.
Hydration: The Most Overlooked Factor
If there's one thing that can make a noticeable difference, it's hydration.
Water doesn't just cool your body-it directly impacts:
- Hormonal balance
- Metabolism
- Energy levels
Poor hydration in PCOS can:
- Worsen insulin resistance
- Increase cravings (thirst is often mistaken for hunger)
- Trigger bloating and fatigue
Aim for at least 2.5 to 3 litres of fluids daily, especially if you're spending time outdoors.
You can include:
- Water
- Buttermilk
- Coconut water
- Lemon water with a pinch of salt
Try to avoid sugary drinks-they can worsen PCOS symptoms.
Simple Lifestyle Tweaks That Help
Managing PCOS in summer doesn't require a complete overhaul-just a few mindful changes:
- Eat small, frequent, protein-rich meals
- Avoid long gaps or fasting in extreme heat
- Prioritise sleep and rest
- Stay cool and avoid excessive heat exposure
These small habits can help stabilise energy and support hormonal balance.
