Exclusive: Doctor Shares How There Is Rise Of Muhurat Deliveries Aligned With Ram Mandir Consecration

In a growing trend seen over the past few years, an increasing number of expectant parents have been scheduling Caesarean Section deliveries to align with auspicious dates and occasions. With the most auspicious time currently being the historic consecration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on January 22, the number of C-section deliveries scheduled has peaked.

From Uttar Pradesh in the north to Karnataka in the south, doctors have reported a rise in demand for what they have aptly termed "muhurat deliveries" to ensure the newborn is welcomed on the day the idol of Lord Ram is installed in a grand ceremony in Ayodhya. Indicating the convergence of cultural tradition and modern childbirth practices, muhurat deliveries are planned C-sections performed on an auspicious date to ensure the birth of the baby at the most auspicious time and date.

Expectant parents as well as families across the country believe that being born on an auspicious date ensures longevity, health, marital harmony, career prospects, and domestic peace for the newborn. Families are now seeking to welcome their newest member into the world on January 22-deemed the most auspicious of days-in the hope that this will imbue the newborn with qualities that define Lord Ram.

In an interview with Boldsky, Dr. Rishma Pai Dhillon, a gynecologist and infertility specialist associated with Lilavati and PD Hinduja hospitals, shares that she is one of the many gynecologists inundated with calls seeking C-Section delivery at 'shubh muhurat.'

While the demand from eager parents is understandable, she cautions that doing a C-Section just for the sake of having a baby at the perfect moment is not a good idea. No doctor would go ahead and deliver a baby prematurely via C-Section just because it's an auspicious time, she warns.
"We get a lot of requests, but unless the expecting moms are close to their due date and unless they require a C-Section, we don't offer it to them," she asserts. In the run-up to the auspicious date of January 22, Dr Dhillon has received numerous calls and consultations.

Normally a gestation period of about 37-40 weeks is considered adequate. By the 37th week, the fetus is fully-grown. C-section can be performed only and only if the mother and unborn fetus meet a strict criteria.

"A Ceasarian is performed in case of a breech baby or twins, or if it is a high-risk pregnancy and the mother is either diabetic or has high blood pressure. Sometimes the pelvis is too narrow and cannot permit a natural delivery," explains Dr Rishma. "There can be complications involving the baby such as reduction in blood flow to the baby or the fluid around the baby drying up, in which case a Ceasarian is advised," she explains. And in such cases, if the parents-to-be request a particular astrologically-important date, then a Caesarian may be performed accordingly.

Pai advises keeping an open mind. The birth of any child is auspicious, no matter what time it happens, since it augurs good tidings and new beginnings, she says. "Most parents-to-be, if given a choice, would opt for a particular auspicious date. If it is safe, possible, necessary, and convenient, then and only then I would advise planning it," asks Dr Rishma.
