Delhi Advises 50% Work-From-Home As Air Quality Stays ‘Very Poor’ For 10th Straight Day

Delhi's air quality crisis worsened yet again on Sunday as the city recorded its tenth consecutive day of hazardous air conditions, prompting a new advisory for private offices to operate at 50 % workforce strength with the remainder working from home. The move is part of Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan and comes following a directive from the Commission for Air Quality Management, which recently revised its pollution-control framework in line with Supreme Court directions.

The city's overall 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood around 380, with some areas like Anand Vihar recording over 429 and Burari exceeding 402. These figures sit firmly in the "severe" category and highlight the urgency of mitigation.

Why the WFH Advisory Was Triggered

As part of the newly tightened GRAP guidelines, actions that were earlier reserved for Stage 4-which includes workforce reduction in offices-have now been advanced to Stage 3 in order to allow for quicker intervention. This was after the Supreme Court took note of delays in action and directed the CAQM to strengthen implementation measures.

With vehicular emissions being one of the major contributors to winter pollution, the authorities believe that reducing office commutes by half can help cut peak-hour traffic and bring down overall pollution levels.

What the Advisory Means for Offices

Private offices across Delhi have been "strongly advised" to:

• Operate with 50% staff on-site
• Allow the remaining workforce to work from home
• Implement this immediately across all units, branches, and satellite offices

The Delhi government has urged employers to circulate the advisory internally and ensure compliance to protect public health and reduce exposure during this prolonged pollution spell.

Other Anti-Pollution Measures Underway

As part of the ongoing implementation of GRAP, construction sites and industrial units across NCR have seen increased inspections to check for dust and emissions. The Delhi government has reiterated guidelines on:

• Avoiding outdoor physical activities
• Minimising vehicle use
• Preventing open burning
• Ensuring proper waste disposal

The authorities continue to watch the situation closely, while the CAQM said it will review restrictions on additional activities if pollution levels surge further.

A City Waiting for Relief

As the AQI shows no signs of coming down and winter conditions are likely to hamper dispersion, experts warn that Delhi might see days with severe episodes of air quality in the near future. For the residents, the latest WFH advisory brings another layer of adjustment to a familiar but worsening seasonal challenge.

As the national capital battles toxic air for yet another winter, the push for reduced office footfall is seen as a necessary step, from both a public health and environmental standpoint, until significant improvement is recorded in the city's air.
