10 Types Of People At Risk Of Breast Cancer: Are You One Of Them?
Breast cancer is extremely common in India, with it accounting for 13.5% of all cancer and around 10.6% of all deaths in the country. With time, experts have seen an increase in the number of cases in young women [1][2].

While it can affect anyone, certain individuals are at a higher risk than others. In this blog article, we will explore the different types of people who are at risk of developing breast cancer. So, let's dive in and find out if you fall into any of these categories!
People Who Are At Risk Of Breast Cancer
1. Family History
- Having a close relative, such as a mother, sister, or daughter, who has had breast cancer can increase your risk.
2. Genetic Mutations
- Inherited mutations in certain genes, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, can significantly increase the risk of breast cancer.

3. Age
- The risk of breast cancer increases with age, especially after menopause.
4. Hormonal Factors
- Prolonged exposure to oestrogen, either through early menstruation, late menopause, or hormone replacement therapy, can increase the risk.
For example, if someone started menstruating at the age of 10, it puts her at a higher risk of breast cancer.
5. Dense Breast Tissue
- Women with dense breast tissue have a higher risk as it can make it more challenging to detect tumours on mammograms.

6. Previous Benign Breast Conditions
- Certain benign breast conditions, such as atypical hyperplasia, can increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
7. Radiation Exposure
- Past radiation therapy to the chest, such as for Hodgkin lymphoma, increases the risk of developing breast cancer.
For example: If someone had undergone radiation therapy for Hodgkin lymphoma when they were 20, it would make them more susceptible.
8. Obesity
- Being overweight or obese, especially after menopause, increases the risk of developing breast cancer.

9. Alcohol Consumption
- Regular and excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of breast cancer.
10. Gender
- Although breast cancer is more common in women, men can also develop the disease, albeit at a lower frequency.
On A Final Note...
Breast cancer does not discriminate, and understanding the risk factors is crucial for early detection and prevention. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and take charge of your breast health!
