7 Expert-Backed Food Habits for Better Energy, Digestion, and Health
Today's fast-paced lifestyle has significantly changed the way people eat and approach their health. With hectic work schedules, increasing stress levels, screen-heavy routines, and the growing preference for convenience foods, balanced nutrition is often overlooked in daily life. Although food choices have become more diverse and easily accessible, unhealthy eating habits and irregular meal patterns are contributing to a rise in lifestyle-related health concerns across all age groups.
According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), nearly 24% of Indian women and over 22% of men aged 15-49 are overweight or obese, while more than 57% of women in the same age group are affected by anaemia. Over 101 million Indians suffer from diabetes, as reported by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
We spoke to Tarannum Sardar, Senior Clinical Nutritionist, Miror Therapeutics, who listed simple food habits to enhance your health.
7 Everyday Food Habits To Improve Overall Wellness
1. A Nutritious Breakfast to Fuel Your Morning
"If you think you can save time by skipping breakfast, it is a sure-shot trap that will eventually lead to lower morning energy and intense cravings. These can then lead to poor snack choices later in the day. Instead, focus on breakfast as an ignition switch for your metabolism," said Sardar. Combine clean protein, complex fibre and healthy fats in your breakfast to give your digestive system the power it needs. Avoid sugary cereals, and go for eggs, oatmeal, nuts, fresh fruits and whole-grain toast.
2. Stay Hydrated
"Water is the ultimate catalyst for human health as it drives multiple functions, such as promoting digestion, cleaning the skin, keeping the metabolism going and making sure organs are functioning optimally," added Sardar. Pure water is a better hydrator than your sugary sodas, coffees and energy drinks. Water helps restore fluid balance, which is not talked about enough in the nutritional cycle.
3. Flood Your Body with Micronutrients
Fruits and vegetables are a natural way to stock up on vitamins. They are packed with essential minerals, fibre, and disease-fighting antioxidants. "When choosing which fruits and vegetables to eat, simply think of the rainbow and add vibrant reds, oranges, and purples to your plate. You can skip a trip to the vending machine by biting into a crisp apple, snacking on a handful of berries, or enjoying some raw vegetables," advised Sardar.
4. Reclaim the Art of Mindful Eating
It is natural to feel disconnected from our bodies while eating. However, mindful eating can help improve nutrient absorption and give you a better understanding of what your body needs and when it is full. "Mindful eating simply means experiencing and enjoying your food without distractions such as your phone or the television. Chew slowly to give your brain enough time to signal when you are full, which can improve digestion and help prevent overeating," explained Sardar.
5. Master Portion Control
Although what you eat matters a lot, how much you eat is equally important. A good tip is to use smaller plates and bowls to trick your brain into feeling full by keeping the portions small. Strive not just for healthy eating but for maintaining an energy balance with portion control.
6. Minimise Processed Foods, Maximise Real Food
Ultra-processed foods such as packaged snacks, frozen meals, and fried foods are definitely convenient but often compromise your long-term health. Instead, shift towards whole foods like roasted chickpeas, yoghurt with honey and simple home-cooked dishes. These are much more nutritious than junk food, such as potato chips and candy.
7. Your Body Runs on Rhythm
The human body is, at its core, a creature of habit. Feed it at erratic hours, and it quietly "revolts: metabolism slows, cortisol climbs, and digestion begins to falter. Keeping your meal timings reasonably consistent, day to day, is one of the simplest ways to bring your hunger hormones back into harmony and help your body actually absorb the nutrients you give it," said Sardar.
Nutrition, though, is perhaps the most misunderstood word in wellness. It has been dressed up as punishment, repackaged as a gruelling 30-day reset, and sold as a before-and-after story. It is none of those things. At its truest, nutrition is a lifelong relationship with your own body - quiet, unglamorous, and built on trust rather than willpower.
Message From The Expert
Sardar explained, "The restrictive diets that flood our social media feed are, almost without exception, designed to fail. They are loud, extreme, and temporary, and when they inevitably collapse, they leave behind not results, but doubt. Real health asks for something far less dramatic: a small, good choice, made consistently, day after day."
