Aloo Mutter: Potato And Peas Curry
Most people want to have food that tastes good, it is more or less healthy and no too complicated to make. Aloo mutter fits the textbook definition of good food. Aloo mutter is a basically an Indian curry made with potato and peas. This potato recipe is a very typical Indian style curry. It is rich in spices and has a thick gravy too.
Aloo mutter is a potato recipe that is made in all parts of the country. There are various ways to making this dish. Down south, people add some coconut to this gravy. In the coastal regions, groundnut powder is added to this Indian curry. But we are going to make aloo mutter in the North India style.

Ingredients
- Small potatoes (new harvest)- 20
- Peas- 200 grams
- Green chillies- 2 (slit)
- Cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
- Ginger- 1 inch (minced)
- Tomato- 1 (chopped)
- Red chilli powder- 1tsp
- Cumin powder- 1tsp
- Kasuri methi or dry fenugreek leaves- 1tbsp
- Fresh cream- 2tbsp
- Garam masala- 1/2 tsp
- Coriander leaves- 2 sprigs (chopped)
- Salt- as per taste
- Oil- 2tbsp
Procedure
- The smaller varieties of potatoes are hard and take a long time to cook. So, cook them in a pressure cooker with water for the duration of 1 whistle.
- Peel the boiled potatoes by hand and keep them aside.
- Heal oil in a deep bottomed pan. When it heats up, add cumin seeds, bay leaf and green chillies.
- Add the boiled potatoes to this pan. Saute for 2 minutes on a low flame.
- Add minced ginger and mix it properly. Cook for another minute.
- Then add tomatoes and sprinkle salt. Also add the peas, red chilli powder and cumin powder into the pan.
- Mix all the spices and cook for 3-4 minutes on a low flame. Add 1.5 cups of water, cover and cook for another 5 minutes.
- Now add kasuri methi leaves and garam masala to the curry. Turn the flame up to medium and let the gravy cook for 3-4 minutes.
- Add fresh cream and mix it up slowly with the gravy. Cook for another 2 minutes and then garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
You can have aloo mutter with rice and rotis.
