Janmashtami 2022: Bengali Shinni Prasad Recipe

Shinni is a special delicacy that is made only for festivals that are in honour of Lord Vishnu like Satyanarayana or Janmashtami. Shinni is offered as prasad (offering) to Narayana specifically. But, it is also a very tasty Indian dessert. Shinni is basically a Bengali recipe. There can be no Janmashtami celebration in a Bengali household without a bowl of Shinni that is offered to Lord Krishna.
Shinni prasad is basically a kind of mixture made with milk, fruits and some flavours. The best part about this Bengali recipe is that it needs no cooking and can be prepared within 10 minutes.
Serves: 4-5 Bowls
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients
- Raw Milk- 1 litre
- Bananas- 4
- Sugar or jaggery- 1 cup
- Wheat flour (atta)- 4tbsp
- Coconut- 1/2 (grated)
- Apple- 1 (cut into pieces)
- Pomegranate- half (peels and extracted)
- Raisins- 10
- Cashew- 10
- Camphor- 1tsp
- Cardamom powder- 1tsp
Procedure
- First of all, wash and cut all the fruits except bananas and keep them aside.
- Now crush the sugar or jaggery into a fine powder. You can even grind it for a minute in the blender to get a uniform powder.
- The other option is to use fine powdered sugar or jaggery.
- Mash the sugar or jaggery with the bananas to form a fine paste.
- Now add it to the milk that should be stored in a large bowl. The milk should be at room temperature, it should be neither warm nor cold.
- Add wheat flour to the bowl full of milk and churn the ingredients together. This is traditionally done with the hands, but you can use a churner if you want.
- Now pour all the chopped fruits and dry fruits into the bowl and mix it properly.
- Then add camphor and cardamom powder to the end.
Offer Shinni to Krishna on Janmashtami and enjoy having it yourself in the form of a prasad or a blessing from the gods.
