JJ Valaya’s Spanish Designs At IBFW 2013
The day one of Aamby Valley Indian Bridal Fashion Week 2013 opened with designer JJ Valaya's collection. This haute couture designer has based his latest collection on Spanish designs. JJ Valaya has named his collection as ‘Maharaja Of Madrid' for the Indian Bridal Fashion Week 2013. This novel name seems to be traced back to a colonial monarch of India who was fascinated with Spanish art and culture.
We are deeply reminded of the Maharaja of Kapurthala (Punjab) who even had a Spanish Maharani. Irrespective of the precise ruler, the designs of JJ Valaya have a voice of their own. The first halves of his collection borrow ideas in lace from Spanish fans and headgear. The bridal lehengas showcased in this part of the show have intricate lace work.
In the men's wear department, JJ Valaya has used ivory work extensively. The long coats and sherwanis are classy with a strange Moghul. The second half of ‘The Maharaja of Madrid' collection at the Indian Bridal Fashion Week 2013 was inspired by Manton de Manila. This basically refers to the large shawls folded into triangles and draped over gowns in Spain. JJ Valaya used this design in combination with intricate Indian motifs in his outfits.
Here is a closer look at JJ Valaya's collection at the Aamby Valley Indian Bridal Fashion Week 2013.

Sky Blue Gown
The format of this gown is like an Indian Anarkali. However, the bright blue gown is adorned with Spanish motifs. The black shrug on the gown adds a glamorous contrast.

Red n Blue Lace Lehenga
The combination of sky blue and orange-red seems to dominate JJ Valaya's collection. This lehenga has a flame-red choli and lace drape.

Deep Neck Red Choli
At first glance, you may see only the plain red choli that has a very deep neckline. But on a closer observation, you will be able to see the Spanish embroidery on the orange-red lehenga.

Floral Lehenga
This lehena choli too has an Indian design and Spanish embroidery. The dominating theme here is floral though.

Black Velvet Kurta
While the style and cut of the kurta is authentically Indian, the fabric used is velvet. This indicates an influence of Spanish coats.

Embroidered Sherwani
This sherwani is again cut and designed in the Mughal Indian style. But the embroidery on it is reminiscent of the Spanish shawls.

Embroidered Sharara
This outfit seems closest to a sharara. The kurta is long and worn over a tight skirt. The embroidery designs are definitely from Manila in Spain.

High-Low Hem Outfit
This outfit is basically a floor length Anarkali with a high-low hem. It has been worn over a frilly churidar.

Grey Floor Length Sherwani
At once this male model seems to be wearing a full length dress! But actually, this is very long grey sherwani that has puffed full-sleeves and a white embellished waistcoat.

Lehenga With Sleeveless Vest
This unique lehenga choli has been worn with an embroidered sleeveless vest. The black and white zid-zag design on the choli is very typically Spanish.

Dori Drape Sherwani
This earthen orange and brown sherwani has a regal touch of shading on it. But the Indian dori on the sherwani makes it a very unique kurta indeed.

Grey Lace Gown
This grey lace gown literally replicates a Spanish fan. The embellishments on this gown are Spanish. The wine coloured full-sleeved shrug is also like a Spanish shawl.

Indian Footwear
Although the designs are inherently Spanish, JJ Valaya has paired them with very simple Indian footwear. These black leather chappals for example are very well-matched with the black and wine coloured sherwani.

Spanish Headgear
This lehenga choli has been worn with a typical Spanish headgear. The headgear has been adorned with a diamond tiara.

Brown n Orange Sharara
This brown coloured blouse has been worn over an orange sharara. The headgear over it has been adorned with an oriental tiara.

Brown Velvet Salwar Kameez
This is the only salway kameez in JJ Valaya's collection. The brown velvet short kurta has been worn with tight leggings. The drape over the salwar kameez is also made of brown velvet and golden zari.
