Chapped lips are a tacky problem. They do not look good, can be painful and are a big hassle when putting on a lip colour. Everyone gets chapped lips in the cold and dry months. For some people, it is a constant annoyance. Everyone buys tubs of lip balms and tubes of chapsticks on a regular basis.

However, what if you could make some at home that are just as good as the store-bought ones if not better? Given below are some good recipes for lip balms. They are not only cost-effective, but they make for a fun DIY project that you can try in batches along with your friends.

1. Jasmine Lip Balm

  • Jasmine essential oil - 2-3 ml
  • Clear petroleum jelly - 2 tbsp
  • Cold pressed jojoba oil - 1 tsp
  • Place the petroleum jelly and jojoba oil in a stainless steel bowl. Place this bowl over the boiling water, making sure the bowl doesn't touch the water. This is called the double-boiling method. Melt the jelly until it mixes well with the oil. Take off from heat. Add the jasmine essential oil and stir well. Wait for 5 mins. Now, pour this mixture in a small tub. Place the tub in a cool place for the balm to set.

  • Green tea bag - 1
  • Cold pressed coconut oil - 2 tbsp
  • Beeswax (grated or pastilles) - 1 tbsp
  • Heat up the coconut oil in a stainless steel bowl. Take off from the heat and empty out the content of the tea bag into it. Cover the bowl and let the mixture infuse for 30 minutes. If you live in a cold climate, place the bowl in a warm oven in order to prevent the oil from setting. Add the beeswax to the bowl and place melt it using a double boiler. Take off from the heat. Stir well and pour into a small container or a chapstick tube if you can find one. Let the balm set.

  • Cocoa butter - 1 tsp
  • Shea butter - 1 tsp
  • Beeswax - 1 tsp
  • Vitamin E oil - 1 ml
  • Argan oil - 1 ml
  • Cocoa flavour oil - 1 or 2 drops
  • Melt the beeswax in a double boiler. When it is halfway through, add in the cocoa butter and shea butter until it combines completely. Take off from the heat. Add in the vitamin E oil, the argan oil, and the cocoa flavour oil. Mix well. Pour into a container and let it set.

  • Rose essential oil - 1 or 2 drops
  • Beeswax - 1 tbsp
  • Clear petroleum jelly - 3/4 tbsp
  • Food grade red colour - 1 ml
  • Melt the beeswax and petroleum jelly in a double boiler. Take off from the heat. Add the rest of the ingredients. Stir well. Pour in a small clear tub. Let it set.

  • Orange essential oil - 1 or 2 drops
  • Lemongrass essential oil - 2 drops
  • Cold pressed jojoba oil - 1/2 tsp
  • Clear petroleum jelly - 1 tbsp
  • Beeswax - 1 tbsp
  • Food-grade orange colour - 0.5 ml
  • Melt the beeswax and avocado butter together in a double boiler. Add the jojoba oil and stir until combined evenly. Take off from the heat. Add the essential oils, and then add the food colour. Mix well. Pour in a small clear container. Let the balm set.

  • Saffron - 0.5 g
  • Saffron essential oil - 1 or 2 drops
  • Gold leaf - 1 small
  • Beeswax - 1 tbsp
  • Shea butter - 1 tbsp
  • Cold pressed olive oil - 1 tbsp
  • Finely grind the saffron with a pestle and place in a bowl. Add warm olive oil to it. Let the mixture infuse for 40 minutes. Melt the beeswax on a double boiler. Add shea butter and combine well. Take off from heat. Add the saffron olive oil infusion and saffron essential oil. Finally, add the gold leaf. Stir quickly until it breaks into fine particles. Mix well. Transfer to a small tub and let it set.

  • Mint essential oil - 1 or 2 drops
  • Cold pressed avocado oil - 1 tsp
  • Avocado butter - 1 tbsp
  • Clear petroleum jelly - 1 tsp
  • Beeswax - 1 tbsp
  • Melt the beeswax and avocado butter in a double boiler. Add the petroleum jelly. Stir till combined evenly. Add the mint essential oil. Transfer to a small container or a chapstick tube. Let it set.

8. Sandalwood lip balm

  • Sandalwood essential oil - 2 drops
  • Beeswax - 1 tbsp
  • Cold pressed coconut oil -1 tsp
  • Clear petroleum jelly - 1 tbsp
  • Melt the beeswax in a double boiler. Add the petroleum jelly. Add the coconut oil. Combine well. Take off heat. Add sandalwood essential oil. Transfer to a small container. Let the balm set.

9. Lavender And Honey Intense Hydration Lip Balm

  • Honey
  • Aloe vera oil
  • Beeswax
  • Clear petroleum jelly
  • Candelilla wax
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Melt the beeswax in a double boiler. When it is halfway through, add in the candelilla wax. Follow with the petroleum jelly. Combine well. Add honey. Mix and take off from heat. Add the aloe vera oil as well as the lavender essential oil. Stir to combine. Pour in a small container. Leave to set.

10. Strawberry Lip Butter

  • Strawberry Essential Oil - 2 drops
  • Candelilla wax - 1 tsp
  • Mango butter - 1 and 1/2 tbsp
  • Vitamin E oil - 1/2 tsp
  • Food-grade pink colour - 1 ml
  • Melt the candelilla wax in a double boiler. Add the mango butter. Melt through and combine. Take off from the heat. Add the vitamin E oil and strawberry essential oil. Add the colour. Stir well. Pour into a chapstick tube. Leave to set.


    All these recipes are free of preservatives. Therefore, they must be stored in the refrigerator and used quickly. It is suggested that you make a small quantity at a time. These balms keep for about 2 weeks, when kept in the fridge.

    Depending on your usage, make them in a quantity that you will be able to use up before the shelf-life is over. Do not make too many kinds at once because you will not be able to finish them on time. Make them in a rotation.
    Perhaps choose two at a time, each in a week's worth of quantity. These balms are very effective in treating chapped lips. Try them and keep your best pout forward!
