Myths vs Facts: Does Shaving Make Hair Grow Thicker For Women?
This article debunks the widespread myth that shaving leads to thicker hair regrowth. It explains our body's natural hair growth cycle, showing how shaving only affects visible parts of the hair and does not influence its thickness or color. Several scientific studies, including a clinical trial published in 'The Journal of Investigative Dermatology', have conclusively disproven this myth.
From time immemorial, one of the most prevalent myths about hair growth is that shaving makes your hair grow back thicker.
This belief has been passed down from generation to generation, causing many people to shy away from shaving for fear of getting coarser or darker hair. However, scientific studies have proven this myth to be false.

Understanding Hair Growth Cycle
To understand why this notion is incorrect, it's important to first comprehend how our hair grows. Each strand of our body or facial hair goes through a cycle of growth (anagen), rest (telogen) and shedding (exogen).
Shaving only cuts off the visible part of the hair above the skin's surface but does not affect its natural cycle beneath.
Science Behind Shaving and Hair Thickness
When you shave, you are cutting off the tapered end of each strand which gives an illusion of thicker regrowth as stubble appears blunter compared to uncut hairs.

However, there is no change in actual thickness or colour because these characteristics are determined by factors like genetics and hormones rather than external influences such as shaving.
Scientific Evidence Debunking The Myth
Several scientific studies have debunked this age-old myth conclusively. A clinical trial published in 'The Journal of Investigative Dermatology' conducted on five men over a period found that - there were no significant changes in their individual hairs' diameter or rate after regular shaving for several months indicating that shaving does not alter the natural parameters of human follicles.

Myths vs Facts: Does Shaving Make Hair Grow Back Thicker For Women?
Women often question whether shaving makes hair grow back thicker. While the perception of thicker hair after shaving is a common myth, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim.
So go ahead and shave, ladies!
