Japanese scientists have come up with a new 'green' hair bleach an eco friendly formula for lightening of hair on the head and also other parts of the body.
The most important factor is that it comes sans the unwanted effects of bleaches used by millions of people every year.
Kenzo Koike, a chemist with Kao Corporation''s Beauty Research Centre in Tokyo, has isolated an enzyme from a strain of Basidiomycete ceriporiopsis which is a type of 'white-rot" fungus that has also shown potential to degrade and clean up pollutants in soil.
Traditional hair bleaches have Hydrogen peroxide content with the process of bleaching usually to be repeated. Hydrogen peroxide, a harsh chemical that with repeated use causes hair to become lifeless and brittle apart from reacting on the natural sheen of the hair. It also can irritate the scalp and other parts of the body. This has led the scientists to work for milder bleaching agents. According to Koike his new bleach solution is long awaited in the market.
The enzyme founded by Koike aids in combating the effects of free radicals, highly reactive agents produced by hydrogen peroxide responsible for making hair brittle, dull, and unmanageable.
The researchers also said that the enzyme could be used in traditional hair bleaches to prevent hair damage with the result of haircare products that have less hydrogen peroxide content.
The research has been presented at the 237th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society.
