Chandra Grahan On Holika Dahan 2026: Find Out Which Raashi Signs May Be Most Affected
On March 3, 2026, Phalguna Shukla Purnima, the day of Holika Dahan 2026 will also witness a total lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahan). According to noted astrology scholar and Vaastu expert Ashish Joshi, this eclipse carries specific scriptural and planetary significance drawn from classical texts and authenticated Panchang sources. Here's a clear breakdown of what this eclipse means, where it will be visible, and how it may influence each zodiac sign.
What Is A Total (Khagras) Lunar Eclipse?
The March 3, 2026 eclipse is a Khagras lunar eclipse, which means the Moon will be completely engulfed by Earth's shadow.
In Vedic terminology, Khagras (Total Eclipse): "Kha" means sky and "gras" means engulfed. The entire Moon is covered.
According to Vedic traditions, strict religious observances apply during Khagras and Khandgras eclipses. Madhya eclipses, however, do not require strict ritual rules.
Date, Tithi And Planetary Context
- Date: March 3, 2026
- Tithi: Phalguna Shukla Purnima (Holika Dahan)
- Type: Khagras (Total Lunar Eclipse)
- Rashi (Zodiac Position): Leo (Simha Rashi)
Because the eclipse is occurring in Leo, its results will be strongly connected to themes of authority, ego, leadership and personal identity. However, outcomes depend heavily on the strength of the Moon in an individual birth chart. The effects of this eclipse may last up to six months or until the next eclipse cycle.
Rashi-Wise Effects Of The Eclipse
Since the eclipse is taking place in Leo, its influence may be felt strongly across fire signs and those with a weak natal Moon. Here's what traditional interpretations suggest:
Aries (Mesha)
Concerns related to studies and children. Mental restlessness is possible.
Taurus (Vrishabha)
Physical discomfort. Stress or health concerns related to mother.
Gemini (Mithuna)
Financial gains and success. One of the more favourable signs.
Cancer (Karka)
Possible financial loss or unexpected expenses.
Leo (Simha)
Risk of injury or physical strain. Emotional sensitivity may increase.
Virgo (Kanya)
Health concerns and monetary setbacks.
Libra (Tula)
Professional success and financial growth.
Scorpio (Vrishchika)
Success in completing tasks, but delays in business matters.
Sagittarius (Dhanu)
Unrest, misunderstandings or reputational concerns.
Capricorn (Makara)
Challenging period. Worship of Lord Shani is traditionally advised.
Aquarius (Kumbha)
Difficulties more pronounced for women; average results for men.
Pisces (Meena)
Victory over opponents and overall progress.
Keep in mind: A strong Moon in the birth chart can reduce negative outcomes and amplify positive ones. A weak Moon may intensify emotional and practical challenges.
Timing Of The Eclipse (IST)
- Start: 2:14 PM
- End: 7:53 PM
- Total Duration: 5 hours 39 minutes
In Eastern India - including Bengal, Mizoram and Tripura, the total eclipse will be fully visible. In most other parts of India, it will appear as a partial eclipse. In parts of Mumbai and half of Gujarat, only a minor (Madhya) eclipse will be visible, meaning strict traditional observances may not apply there.
Where Will It Be Visible?
The eclipse will be visible in:
- India
- Asia
- Europe
- South America
- Africa
- Australia
Regions where the Chandra Grahan is visible are considered bound by eclipse-related observances under traditional guidelines.
Sutak Period: When Do Restrictions Begin?
Scriptures state that the Sutak period for a Chandra Grahan begins three prahars (approximately 9 hours) before the Moon becomes visible in a particular location.
Since moonrise in most parts of India (including Gujarat and Maharashtra) is around 6:51 PM, the Sutak will begin at approximately 9:51 AM.
From around 10:00 AM onward:
- Temples should remain closed
- Food consumption should stop
- Fasting is advised
For elderly individuals and children, Sutak begins approximately 2.5 hours before moonrise instead of nine hours.
Why This Chandra Grahan 2026 Is Important
A Chandra Grahan on Holika Dahan carries symbolic weight - fire below, shadow above. Traditionally, eclipses are seen as moments of heightened sensitivity. Decisions taken impulsively during this time are generally discouraged. This isn't about fear. It's about awareness. Understanding the timing, observing the Sutak where applicable, and knowing personal planetary strength can help navigate the period with clarity rather than anxiety.
